We have to go to a wedding of the son and DIL in Fiji next year....but I'm absolutely terrified of flying, so that in itself will be stressful and probably cause a painful time just on the TN itself.
But does anyone know if flying actually affects TN as a seperate issue.
I hadn't thought about it other than the stress of me flying but hubby thought maybe the cabin pressure might affect things as well.
So has anyone who flies, had any issues with TN flaring up?
I think you'll get a variety of responses. I flew from San Francisco to Palm Springs last week. No Problem. I have fairly decent pain management and I didn't have any problem. Several years ago, I flew to Boston with no problems. Next month, I will fly to Boston and I don't anticipate any problems (cross your trigeminals).
I fly a about four times a year. When my pain is well managed I have no problems or triggers at all. If my pain is bad then of course I am miserable but the pain is no worse or better for flying. I have no fear of flying but I am always relieved when we land. It will be fantastic in Fiji!
I really hope more people reply to your post. My mother is having horrible pain and she's supposed to travel in 2 days. I'm terrified for her but she has to travel to get proper treatment for her TN. I hope flying doesnt make her TN worse. I'll let you know how it goes in two days.
Friend of ours just got back after contracting bacterial meningitis after swimming over there. They weren't sure he was going to make it and his wife had to be flown over. So swimmings off the list lol He did say that the resorts out of Suva might be a different story though.
Good luck to your mum Asmara. Look forward to hearing how she goes.
Once again, being new to the forum that answers another question. Will be flying to Vegas in june and was wondering about that. My TN is pretty well controlled.
i'm not in a stage i can manage the pain in every day life - so can't think of getting to a vacation or flying.
BUT
if it's a must - maybe you can take some kind of half a sleeping pill (that will last 3 hours) - i can make sure your pain won't "arouse".. and have some friend traveling with you of course - so you'll be able to wake up when needed .
Oh dear! Not good, however we all have heard horror stories about places others have visited and then many many more stories about fab holidays. I understand your concern but I have known many say it is a wonderful country, I hope for all good for you.

Nir Morita........a few years ago when we had to fly, after the plane took off and the seat belt sign went out, another passenger came up to me and asked 'would you like some of my valium'!!!! I did refuse the offer as who knows just what his 'valium' may have been lol
But there will be about two dozen of us all so I'm sure if I did take something they'd make sure I got off the plane.
Jackie....apparently Suva is not the place to be in Fiji. Its under military rule and quite volatile apparently. Its on our Federal advisory of places to steer clear of. Apparently where we will be going you land and the international airport which is outside Suva and then its about a 2 or 3 hr bus trip to where we will be going.
I did a couple of 10 hour flights last year had no problems at all, I guess it is going to vary from person to person.
Enjoy your time in Fiji, how exciting to be going to your son's wedding in such a beautiful location.
Might be worth checking with your doctor about getting typhoid shots, about half the people I know visiting Fiji have the shots and the others don't bother. I am sure it would be worth getting some medical advice on this issue as they do have break-outs from time to time.
Typhoid and hepatitis we have to have plus we have to have some pills for any water we drink if we dont drink bottled water.
Most of the family are rather disgusted that they want to get married in Fiji actually. Theres a lot of reasons why so many in the family wont be able to go and trying to save when on a pension is difficult, so that may prevent us going as well as a few others too. Why cant they marry here and go honeymoon there lol
Tell the bride and groom to stay home, put a Fij travelogue
Video on a big screen in the reception hall. Place bottles
of Fiji water on each table so every can attend the
great day If the newlyweds can’t do this,
then skype the darn thing.
ooooh , Aus, agree this seems dodgy. I often question the new trend of marrying a long way from home. It does cost relatives such a lot of money they often would prefer not to have to find.
I've flown several times since diagnosed with TN. I've been okay each time. I have to make sure to keep my ears popping (opening my mouth or yawning). I was scared too but it all went well.
okay...I read that several people have NO problems with flying; wish I was one of them! I flew to SC 6 weeks ago and was okay the way there (two flights with 2 hour layover in between)...the trip home was another story. I had ZERO pain for the first time in 4 months that lasted for 2 weeks; then the trip. Ever since, I have had problems...my neuro has been wonderful in adjusting the meds...but, non the less, I still hurt. Good luck, maybe the pressure / stress / whatever combination causes it will not happen to you. I did use the 'earplane' ear plugs...I swear they did help! worth the money!
