Struggling with work lately. Boss Ok but they don't really get it. I work on the shop floor of a bust DIY shop with a lot of lifting. We seem to have a skeleton staff at the moment which is bloomin hard work.
Does anyone know about sick leave.Presumably the sick pay runs out at some point. I'm a bit worried as money tight.Work also have a policy of 3 sicknesses in 12 rolling months. Then it's a disaplinary then yer out.Hopefully disability act keeps my job safe.
Does anyone have any useful info on work related matter??
I'm quie new to this and have only just recently been diagnosed with TN, so still learning about it! I've been off work since I was diagnosed, there's no way I could work at the moment! Like yourself we have the same sickness policy, I think most companys do now! I've already had 2 sickness periods during the last 12 months, one with flu, where work sent me home and the 2nd for food poisioning (again a work related day at Uni), so I've already been told that I'm going to have a sickness review upon my return to work - like we ask for this horrible condition! Anyway, work have also said that they have to refer me to occupational health, I don't mind this as they may come up with suggestions that may assist upon my return to work. Does your company have an Occ health dept, if so ask for a referral. Also my daughter said that she thinks that this condition should come under the disability act, I certainly hope so.
Also, CAB are usually very good for advice, so you could also give them a call re: sick pay and your rights.
if you find out that TN comes under the disability act here in the UK pls can you let me know? I have looked and looked with no success. And Jacks, all the best with this, I know its very difficult for all of us. Jackie

Thanks Mandy. The Coping With Crisis paper is now out on site to help us but any info you can pass on to me can be incorporated on that article so I really would appreciate what you find out being shared. I will pass it on to Red to put in there. All the best with all this, but please remember although you cannot work at the moment I was in just the same boat 18 months ago and now my TN is managed, i know it may not last forever but I live for today and will cope with tomorrow when it happens. Take care. Jx
PS take a look through the HELP tab for tips on how to find your way through the site! It has taken me a while and I am still learning!!

I was told by someone on TNUK that it was.I'm hoping they were right. I'll watch to see if Jackie finds anything with inerest. My company head office will have occ health but not our store! I'm begining to hate my job.
I applyed for office job which they told me i could have it,great,i thought, off the shop floor. No heating regs in this large DIY store and the cold is aggravating my face. They changed there mind and put a youngster up there.I'm 44 and pritty fit but you'd have thought they would have put a youngser on the shop floor.
It just seems so unfair! As you can probably tell I'm not happy about it. LOL.
No and I don't blame you! I work in a very cold environment and it's no fun. Do you think it's because young people are cheaper?

Jackie, I know everyone is different but how long did you need to be off work for before you were able to go back? I work approx 27 miles away from my home and at the moment just the thought of getting into a car as apassenger, let alone the driver, makes me feel literally sick! I just have no idea how long these feelings are likely to last!

jacks, it possibly looks like that you mayb covered under the equality and human rights act and if so and you can't manage job you are currently doing then your employers may need to look at re-deployment as an option for you. I've passed all the details of what I've found out to Jackie.
I tried anti convulsants for 4 weeks and had to stop as I just couldn't function.I need to go back to work,I eas embaraced to keep calling doc to ask for another sick note.I couldn't even string a sentance together! Balance went, horrid.I've just started Nortriptyline to see if that helps at all.Just upping the dose slowly over a couple of weeks. They for depression but they dose it differently and it can help with pain.Side effects startted already I think.I usually have odd dreams but not disturbing ones!I'm feeling agitated and just not myself.I'll give them a month. The dull aching pain in my face was doing to send me over the edge,i'm sure of it.Seems ok now but I'm sure buy this afternoon/eve I'll be aching.GREAT as I have a late shift tonight. Not sure what differance the dissability act will do.Will help with sickness leave. You wont get free prescriptions,I sugest you prepay if you have 14items or more per year. They will ask if there are any adjustments they can make to help. But I don't see them putting the heating on just for me!
Jackie,
Do you have any sugestions for keeping face warm? Limited to what I can do.I might get away with a buff.Problem at the mo is the aching is eye, upper cheek and nose. Both sides.(sinus checked and clear)If i pull buff up over nose I steem up my glasses,Glassas proving difficlult to wear too.Agony.Wearing the lightest I could get to.I can't afford to get the ultra light ones.
For Mandy, I have never had time off work due to TN, I am the manager and put myself in the office and do paperwork when I am unable to talk and in to much pain for the public to see. I am used to the meds now so that is not the problem. I only have 13 miles to go and that's bad enough so 27 is a nightmare.I wished I had better answers for you Jc
For Jacks, Apart from a balaclava which I am sure you have thought of I am unsure. One suggestion is to take the anticonvulsents again. Only under your Dr's supervision of course. They do take a while to get used to but if they help you could have your quality of life back. A slow titrate up is the answer and then your body adjusts in a better way and the shock to the system is less. Untreated pain can become chronic and is then a nightmare to treat I have seen Red say.I take my meds dutifully 3 times a day and I have a very demanding job calling for quick decision making but I cope. I know I am one of the lucky ones but it could be the answer for you with winter approaching and you loving your sports. A good neuro can be a lifesaver with this and a referral to MaxFax or a Neuro is something to consider. All my advice should be thought of in use with a Dr of course, I am not medically trained. But it worked for me and works for many others too. All the best and keep in touch everyone. J x

My work is obviously aware that i have a nerve problem in my face. But as i said earlier they just don't get it.So I have printed a picture that shows where the nerve goes around the face to show them. But something crossed my mind as I did it.I seem to suffer any side effects of drugs given.ie.dizziness,nausia,headaches,tremours,balance problems, memory problems I even found myself stuttering today! I notice on some of the drugs the side effects list can cause seizures.I know this is rare but should I tell work what drugs I'm taking? I also climb a lot of high ladders to.I do worry that i might get a dizzy spell on a ladder!!! I can't do my job without climbing then though.I found the tremours and dizziness a bit scarey, and i was a bit distressed about not remembering if I'd fed the dogs or not this morning.Has anyone else worried about this kinda thing?
Unfortunately, I'm sufferring with most of the same side effects as you are and it's horrible, so I really do feel for you having to go to work at present. I can't even walk outside the house on my own at the moment let alone drive so I feel there is no way I can go to work. Like you my memory is shot at the moment and it's so frustrating isn't it?
In my opinion, I don't think you should be climbing ladders, esprcially with your dizzyness and you should possibly tell your managers what drugs you're on and the effects of them for insurance purposess. But before you do anything give the Equality and Human Rights Commission a call first who will give you good advice on your questions - this is who I called a couple of days ago and they were so helpful, pleasent and made me feel as though I was a person who counted!!! Their number is 08456046610.
I've been told not to worry about the memory thing at the moment and that it's just my body getting used to the drugs, I sure hope so but hey maybe we can turn it around in our favour such as 'hey darling, when are we going to book that holiday in the Carrabian which you promised me?' doubt it will work but it's worth a try ha ha!!!
Anyway, give them a call and I'd be interested in how you get on.
Just off to work now.Think I will have to talk to my bosses (as I have many).I have an early shift.Maybe i will function better in the morning.Ment to up my dose tonight and dress as Pudsey Bear tomorrow! Side effects are horrid.Although I'm less effected by the Nortriptyline is affecting less than the anti-convulsants.I wonder if you go through this every time you mix and match.I gather from reading that people do as the meds stop being effective.
It's so nice to talk freely about it.i think my partner is going to get bored listening to me so I'm trying not to let it rule my thoughts.(as it shouldn't) but i want to know as much as poss.It is a puzzling subject! Talking of the Carrabian...How does this affect out holiday insurance??? :-/ Mandy said:

I jumping in here, sorry!Jacks, I declared my TN and it cost nothing and was covered. I think if you have been hospitalized or are waiting surgery it is a bit different. Jackie
Was that you hol insurance?? Or sick pay?? I left a post about hol insurane to and your answer could be for either. I have herd of people on TNUK having hol insurance denied.
I don't holiday much but my partner likes to.
With ref to disabilty act...All I can see is that disabilitys are judged...somehow.Some one gave me a human right phone no.which i might get a chance to call tomorrow.I'm still looking into this as obviously i worry about work.
I went to Kos the week I was diagnosed, I declared it and had to pay an extra £10 which I didn't think was bad......maybe next time I go away I may need to look at who you use Jackie! I generally use Atlas and do it on line.
Hope you get the works issue sorted out soon Jacks, it must be a worrying time for you, not sure if I said but I've got an Occ health app next Thurs, not really sure how I feel about it but I'm trying to stay positive and hopefuuly it will be a good thing although never really had anything much to do with Occ health in the past so not really sure how they work!
Good luck with phone calls tomorrow and hope you get some good and positive advice.
Let me know how you get on with occ health. Will be interesting to see if they can or will make changes for you.Question is what changes do you ask for? Sometimes i feel ok and am happy to do all jobs and sometimes i want to be left alone but thats never going to happen.I'd like them to turn the music off!! but it wont be happening.I just can't think what can be done in the work place to help. When its bad you just want to be at home. You don't want to be dealing with customers.I'd happily plod on with my jobs if I didn't have to run around with customers.
I've been very lucky,my boss has moved to a less active job which is in a warmer part of the building.
He also knows a little about Neuralgia. And he knows I'm a fighter. So I'm only off when i have to be.
I probably have a lower sick record than most of the other guys there.
Thing are going great at work lately as there is a huge charity drive on and thats just my thing.
Mind you I've not had, what I call a humdinger since around March last year,I think.Face and teeth on edge in this cold and a humdinger must be due by now.
