Post Surgery

Well, I had surgery on Monday in Charleston @
MUSC. The doctor ended up cutting a nerve. Once he got in there, he saw that a nerve was wrapped around another and made it turn gray. Dr. Patel said that the larger nerve was necessary to keep because it drains fluid from the brain. So he did not want to interfere with it. He wished that he could have carterized(spelling?) it but did not want to take a risk. He cut the nerve that had turned gray. He thinks that this will take care of my pain. I woke up from surgery feeling ok. I was more scared of the waking up part than the actual surgery. After reading Victor's experience. I was really pleased. I had 3 staples in my forehead and 10 behind my ear. The doctor did not shave my hair either. I wouldn't have cared if he had shvedhalf my head though. As long as it helps. I have a little pain at the incision site. It gets worse at times. He gave me oxydodone to take care of that pain. I am also on a steroid for a week for swelling. I hope this does the trick. I am going to have to trust that it will. I will keep you guys posted. I will post pic!

Denise, I am wishing the very best for you. Please let us know how you are doing.

I am wondering how you are doing now, over 2 weeks post-op? I hope all is going well and you are finally pain free. Anxious to hear from you.

Thanks Nancy Jo and Holly. Well, I am 2 weeks out and I wish I had good news. I still have the staples behind my ear. I get them removed on Wednesday. I still have the ear pain. It started back on Christmas night. Once I reduced the amount of oxy that I was taking, the pain reminded me of how horrible it can be! I am still taking the same medicine that I have been on for the last few months. The time released one for Nucynta, I still have some of the Kadian time release. I have bounced back and forth to see which one will give me the most relief. The Kadian does but it kind of makes me lazy. So, I am where I have been for 2.5 years. The pain is actually a little worse at the moment. I am praying that I am still healing. Happy New Year!

HI Ben, So good to hear your surgery went well. What nerve did the y cut or was it something else? When you have time read bout my ordeal with cutting the 7th cranial nerve. I guess if they cutt a nerve it did not control anything. They said mine died, so they had to cut it, but now I am deaf, and have difficulty with balance. Wonder why you had two incisions? It is just great how far they have come since my last surgery in 2006. We have more neurosurgeons here in Louisville that now say it is a pretty easy surgery, VS. when I had my first back in 2006, where there was only one surgeon, and he had never done the MVD, so I opted to go to Janetta, figuring he would be best. Unfortunately I still have pain in throat and still the affected ear, which is strange, since they cut that nerve? I guess it is referred pain. Overall I think with time it is either getting better, or I'm just bitching more which may be helping, lol not too bad. Pain does cause irritability though, lol My husband always suspects when I a, in pain, and he is most of the time right, I just don't like to admit it. lol At least now we laugh some about it. Look forward to hearing your progress, plz keep posting!
