Stress as a trigger

I’ve never had stress trigger a flare up.
I’ve been my father’s caretaker for quite a few months now.
In the middle of a flare up I had to call an ambulance for him and he’s been in the hospital since this is been for about 5 days now. My last flare up lasted 4 days. I’ve never had 1 last this long. after about 2 days of a break, I feel another 1 coming on.
I am wondering, can stress be a trigger?
I hate to say it this way, but I’m very grateful that my dad did have to be in the hospital during the worst part of my flare up.
After having to find a nursing home for him to go to yesterday, I’ve been feeling like I’ve got another flare up coming on once again.
So I’m wondering also if if there’s any suggestions for an emergency like medication.
I takr Neurontin, tegretol, savella, baclofen, and busiprone on a regular basis to control things.
For breakthrough pain, I take percocet and pfenegran for nausea.
In the beginning of this last flare up, these this combination worked.
For the majority of the flare up though, it did not work at all. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me to try for the breakthrough pain at home as far as a medication may go.
My doctor said I can come in for toradol injections, but those are very temporary and don’t seem to ever coincide with the flare ups in when I can get my appointment of course.
I have an appointment with my doctor later today so any suggestions would be very helpful

I'm sorry you are going thru this transition -- yes stress makes TN worse and TN makes stress worse!

TN also is progressive - meds have to be added, raised, trialed

My miracle breakthru "drug" for emergency pain was / is Lidocaine Patches - works for many -- lasts 12 hours

Just call your doc and ask them to call in a prescription --- you don't have to make an appt!

Let us know how things are going.....

I've been wondering, also, about stress flaring up pain, and I think it does (as much as I hate to admit it). I am under-medicated, have nothing for break-thru pain. When I called my neuro's office after a bad flare-up, I was told I could make an appointment for a Toradol injection (that's a pretty weak drug in my opinion), and what good does it do after the flare-up? I keep calling the office when I increase the Gabapentin/Neurontin on my own and inform them of increasing need for meds, but I don't get any response from my Dr.

Yes, I’m sorry about your Dad too and I understand the relief you felt when he was hospitalized. I have been through all of this in the past 18 months too. Stress like that is definitely a huge trigger, it excites the whole CNS.

I get my very best relief, when things are just over the top, when I add zoplicone, a sleeping pill, to my gabapentin and go to bed. This of course will not help when you have to be doing daytime things.
Hope you find relief.

kg: Can you get another doctor or help from your primary --- that is malpractice in my eyes!

I would definitely be worried about respiratory depression on those type of meds.

Yes, my Dr told me that stress is a trigger. He says that its a vicious cycle really, stress causes pain...pain causes stress..etc.

I am very sorry to hear about the troubles your dad is having as well, but i think there's no shame in being grateful that he was being cared for while you needed to care for yourself.

Breakthrough pain...lidocaine helps a lot. I also have instructions from my dr that i can increase my gabapentin up to 3600mg for the day, if i need to. That's all the experience i have ...although i've seen here on this site, lots of other meds/combinations listed..as well as stuff you can ask for from the ER, such as dilaudid.

As for Dr's not being as responsive as you'd like...yeah. i have that problem too sometimes. Which is why i'm currently looking for a new one. Maybe you should consider the same....?

Wishing you peace and some relief

Unfortunately I had to cancel my appt. Yesterday. But, things are settled down with the family.
They have also found something wrong with my moms heart yesterday too-I know I just need to turn off any stress triggers now.
I am doing better. Just feeling like someone had punched me in the face. That is something I can tolerate.
Thanks for all the help!
