Neurontin-How long until it works?

Hi…I am new here. I was just diagnosed last week. I was wondering of those that have taken Neurontin how long did it take to work and what dosage were you on? My neurologist said that it has to built up in your system to work and I am waiting for pain relief.

Hey! I used it for 4-5 months, was up to like 600 mg three times a day, and the only thing it did for me was make me fat! I gained about 60 pounds while on it. :frowning: BEWARE of all the side effects…although there are side effects to every medication. Best of luck to you Tammy, I hope you find the correct combo of meds to help you!!!

Welcome Tammy!
I had so many meds I couldn’t tell you how long my build up to 3,600mg took. I’m at 1,200mg now.
You can ‘google’ Neurontin for the bio-breakdown info.
I hope you have relief soon! bob

Thank you everyone for your support. I just received the TN handbook
In the mail. I know that everyone reacts differently to meds.
I am feeling much better the last two days. I hope that means
the medication is working. It seems I had it come and go before
so I guess only time will tell. It’s frustrating to be diagnosed with
a third potentially disabling disorder and not even 40 years old. I
feel twice my age sometimes. I worry about the long term.

Hi Tammy! I think Sabrina (by the way, she is great-alot of help to me) gave you good advice. When I was taking neurontin I worked up to a dosage of 2700mg/day. 900mg 3x/day. I was also taking it with cymbalta which I believe helped but I had to discontinue the cymbalt as you can see by my story. This combo was the best I had ever been on but the neurontin became ineffective after about 2 1/2yrs. That can happen with meds. You can slo see in my story what I am currently taking which I prefer over any meds in the past. We are all different in how we react to various meds. I also experienced the side effects which Sabrina mentioned but they were worth the pain relief I got. I wish you well as you start your journey. It’s not a journey any of us would wish to take but we can make it trhough. Take care, James
