Neurontin

Would love to hear from anyone that has taken Neurontin. The good, the bad, and the ugly of it. I'm newly diagnosed with TN, and I'm trying to arm myself with as much info as possible. My main question regarding this medication is how long before I notice any pain relief? Thanks so much for any information!

It did take several weeks to taper up to a pain managing dose for me. I now take 2400 mg per day and I am fine. Some do report some breakthrough pain at times. I “fairground” if I make swift head movements. I have word retrieval problems and I need spell checker all the time. I sleep very well. I am subject to frequent infections, mainly chest and GI. I have less s/e on Neurontin than Tegretol and feel generally happier.
We are all different, but I hope relief will be yours, soon.

Thanks for the info. I am only taking 600mg per day. Right before bed. It doesn't seem to last quite long enough so I called my dr today to see if I could take a pill maybe around 1 in the afternoon. Now he is requesting that I see a dentist even though my dentist says my teeth are fine. I was hoping he would work with me on finding a dose that would help me. Instead it seems he is writing me off. A bit aggrivated at this point.

The effects of neurontin typically last from 4 to 5 hours. I take 600mg, 4 times a day. I do get the spins when I turn over if I am lying down, and do get occasional dizziness throughout the day. I do not get total, pain relief at all, but I am on the maximum dosage FOR ME of this medicine. I should tell you I have bilateral TN2, and we all have different needs as far as treatment goes.
If possible, you might consider another neurologist. It doesn’t sound like your doctor is very helpful.
Hope you get some relief soon!

I started out on neurontin, and it was my miracle pill for a while. My pain was totally controlled on 300 mg/day. I felt so good I decided to use my sonic toothbrush...big mistake. I went up as high as 1800mg/day and never got the relief I had. Tried Trileptal, no luck and bad side effects (for me), now lyrica, no luck. I had very few side effects with Neurontin (maybe just a little tired, but nothing too bad).

I really hope it works for you! Wishing you pain free days!
