Fear Of Flying

We are taking my 3 year old son to Disney World for the first time this March. While I am so excited for this family vacation, I’m also scared to death. I’ve heard that people with TN can have a really hard time with flying and that it can trigger an attack. I’m wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this. Thank you all!

I fly frequently and have not had an issue. However, I just went to Disneyland and had all kinds of nasty triggers there. The rides, loud vibrating music and sounds, some smells (weird because this has never been a trigger), crowds with people caused me increased anxiety as I was afraid of getting hit accodently…

I love Disneyland and it is one of my fave spots. First time ever it was not so magical for me.

Hi Monkey’s Mom,
Flying never used to affect my TN until my TN worsened over the last few years, now the vibration just driving on the ramp as well as any kind of turbulence can set off an attack.
So…if vibration is a trigger or let’s say any kind of jarring/shaking motion triggers your pain then I’d be concerned.
I hope you’re able to go and have a fabulous time!!
Mimi

I hope not, because I'm flying to Chicago in 2 weeks.

Oh geez Lisa, I hadn't even thought about DisneyWorld itself bothering me. Something else to think about...

Thanks for the input Mimi. It's been years since I've flown and my TN was not very bad at that time. As it has gotten worse, I was concerned about those types of issues. Typically jarring doesn't really bother it, only direct contact.

Thank you for your well wishes, I too hope it's a great trip.

I've had no problems flying but vibration doesn't seem to be a problem for me like it can be for some people. I always travel with a scarf so that i can hold it up across my face if there is cold air blowing. First thing I do as I sit down is to make sure the little air thingy above my head is turned off.

I recently did a day in Disneyland Hong Kong and had no additional problems although they don't have the bigger rides that are in Disneyworld or Disneyland in California.

Hope you have a magical vacation .

Trish

I just went through the same thing. I have it on both sides, both type 1&2. I had to fly two months after my first MVD, but, still have an awful time on the other side.
Anyways, I was terrified, as you are. I took no extra medication, and after all connecting flights there and back, a total of four, each and every one was fine. With no attacks after either.
I think one of the hardest parts of TN is the unknown, waiting for another attack, not knowing if something we may do that may trigger one, it’s an awful existence.
Try your best to quiet the concerns, focus on your family,

Glad to hear that you don't have issues with flying Trish, that makes me feel better as our vacation approaches. I'm hoping for a great vacation with my family!!

Hi blueeyedgirl, I'm glad to hear that you had a successful trip! You're absolutely right, the worst part of TN is the unknown. Never knowing what is going to spark an attack or when it will rear it's ugly head.

I shall indeed focus on my family and the wonderful time we will be having!!

Best regards!

Hi Monkeys Mum,

If your sensitive to aircon like me which triggers my severe ear and jaw pain make sure you wear a hoodie or having something over your head and ears because cold is the worst. Make sure you keep your body hydrated because once again the aircon dehydrates our bodies and if your are sleeping on the plane get one of those cushy head/neck rests.

I really hope you get to enjoy your holiday with the family.

I wanted to add that I always carry hot packs ( the kind you shake and they heat up for in your gloves in winter) they help to soothe the pain. I also have oragel for my teeth and Emla cream which is a lidocaine based cream you can get over the counter in Canada. Might need a prescription in the US. I apply it to the area on my face, to reduce the pain slightly.
I have bilateral TN both 1 & 2.

I am leaving day after tomorrow to go from Northern Oregon to Southeast Florida for a family wedding. My TN does worse in the heat, but I do get the breeze issue. Going through the north side of Glacier National State Park, on the train set my TN off badly. I am going to take all my meds a hour before the flight leaves so they are working before I need them to be working. Will see how it goes.
