Compounding Lotion

I have had good results using a prescription compounding lotion for ATN on my cheek (near my nose). It contains neurontin, ketamine, and lidocaine. Initially, I tried a sample that was not strong enough. Then my doctor had the compounding pharmacy make it as strong as allowed. Wow! What a difference! It's helping a lot! I have noticed the pain relief gets better after continued use over a week or two.

I've had zero results with two radiofrequency ablations and a neurostimulator so this is monumental to me! Granted, I am still on Lamictal and pain med (vicodin) as needed (3/day max) but I've been able to stretch the amount of time between pain pills. I've been inside all day today and have not had to take a pain pill all day!

I do not know the amounts except the lidocaine is 17% I think. I can get the amounts from the compounding pharmacist if anyone is interested.

The prescription content and proportions may vary between patients, Mary. Each patient's physician will need to find a local compounding pharmacist to explore this alternative. Thanks for your information and good intention.

Regards, Red

Hi Mary,

Where is your pain located? Is it only on the cheek area near the nose only? Is yours 24/7 pain or just intermittent pain? Part of my pain includes my chin down to the jawline. I'm thinking this compounding agent may help with the constant chin pain that I have that feels like a bunch of bee stings and when it's touched, it's aggravated. If you can get the ingredients and their percentages, I can ask my pain doctor about prescribing them. I had a dentist from the University of Kentucky prescribe some topicals for me one time that had similar ingredients in them but it didn't work very well at all. The Magic Mouth wash that cancer patients use helped with my mouth pain, at least for about an hour.

The pain I experience is chronic 24/7 pain in every tooth, upper and lower gums, front part of tongue, front half of upper palate , bottom lip, and chin down to along jawline. It is exacerbated by touch which means brush teeth, wind blowing, getting dressed, eating , drinking, washing face, etc. is not a pleasant experience. My Kentucky dentist gave me a compound with some oragel in it to help it stick to my teeth, but it looked like I was an elementary kid eating paste! Not a pretty sight but the meds were not efficacious either. So, if your doc is offering anything possibly "better", I'd like to run it by my physician.

Thank you, in advance, for forwarding any information on this compound. One never knows what might help. Thank you.

im very interested in the compounding lotion. I would really appreciate the ingredients. thanks

I'm interested in Mary's ingredient's also and the % of each amount. I do recall that the compound that I was prescribed had Neurontin in it. A Dr. Jeff Okeffson (?) from the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Kentucky prescribed it. However, he added Oragel to mine to keep it on my teeth. As mentioned, I looked like I has paste wiped all over my teeth. It it had worked well, I would have put up with the paste look but it didn't work well for me. Apparently, it does work for Mary. Hope you write soon, Mary. Thanks! Sorry I missed your call tonight! Tinkerbell

Have you tried Magic Mouthwash yet? My Hematologist/Oncologist prescribed it awhile back and I still occasionally use it. Lots of Head and Heck Cancer patients use it after surgery or radiation. I found that it does help temporarily for a little while. It has to be compounded as well. Like most things, it works better for some than for others. Again, it's for use in between pain meds for me, if needed. It just "numbs" the pain for awhile. Not a magic bullet but calms things down a bit for a little while.
