2nd and 3rd MVD's

Was just wondering when people have MVD's performed after the first one no longer works.

*Do they take the screws out of the plate or mesh that held the first one or do they create a new hole

I guess what Im asking is

*Is the hole they cut in my head now a servicable opening for a future MVD ?

Thank you my TN buddies & friends!

I just recently had my second MVD and they went in through the same hole. The reason from what I understood is that the hole never closes hence the mesh plate. They took my mesh plate off and went in through the same hole. The only obstacle they said they typically have a problem is if your body is more prone to developing scar tissue. My surgeon told me he only does 2 MVD’s on one side and that is it. So after the last one it was a gamble to have it done a year after my first MVD.

Could someone explain to me why the first one would not work, it it because the teflon pad slips or moves?

Linda,

For me the first didn’t work because my pain was so severe they thought it was only from the trigeminal nerve. After my first MVD I was still in a severe amount of pain from both typical and atypical. My surgeon suggested at my age (26) that my only option for a 70% chance of relief was another MVD. He told me I have a cross between trigeminal, genticulate, and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. He had no other clues when he did the first to take a look at my whole cranial line. I had compressions on my 7th, 9th and 10th cranial nerve. During my first MVD he found a vein wrapped around the nerve and an artery sitting on the it. I still have alot of atypical pain that I can handle through pain management so its not a total loss that I had the surgery. My only fear is that 2 surgeries and I am done so what will be left later in life.

Hi, Jessy,
I am so sorry to hear that. You are so young to be dealing with such a horrible problem.
I just had MVD surgery this last August. I am so wearied today because yesterday I was feeling so good and I decided to do some major housework, well, to me it was major. Everyone else has been doing housework etc, for me but I decided to be the one to mop the floors, clean the bathrooms, dust and polish furniture etc and last night my entire right side of my head, where my surgery was begin to be numb and tingly. I woke up this morning and it is also feeling this way. I am upset with my self because even the tingling sensations I was still having had finally begun to disappear. I am hoping I have not messed up my surgery. We I read about the 2 & 3 surgeries , this scared me.

Rick,
Good question since I am considering surgery again. Are you still free from TN pain? I have been off line for so long I haven’t had time to catch up. I hope you are doing well. I see you had your other surgery. I am sorry I missed that but you were in my thoughts and prayers. I knew you were scheduled for sometime late October.

Linda,
My surgeon told me the day after my surgery that the pads could have slipped already.
