What ive been told about insurance for MVD! help

I called to make an appointment with a Neurosurgeon who was recommended to me. Its at Mt, Sinai in NYC and im being told they only take Medicaid or medicare and no private insurances. My mother is buying me insurance so before we go any further i wanted to ask others and see how they took care of it insurance wise. I don't understand why they wont take private insurance, and medicaid can take up to 45 days to get in New York. This Dr also specializes in MVD, but im thinking i may be in better hands at the Mayo Clinic. I'm scared and want an EXPERIENCED Neurosurgeon who deals with TN. I need to have a procedure done and i dont know where to start now :( if anyone has been in this situation please let me know if you had to buy insurance or if this medicade is a standard thing....thanks so much everyone!

Ugh. I have private insurance. Any referral you get the doctor should make sure you clear all the insurance requirements and the referral doctor takes your insurance. Are you eligible for Medicaid Medicare? If this a doctor you trust and want to do the surgery it might pay off to wait those 45 days for the Medicaid Medicare. Waiting is not my favorite thing to do. Are there any other neurosurgeons near you whom you would like to do the MVD that will take you’re insurance?

I don’t have any words of wisdom for you other I’m sorry your stuck in this libbo spot. It will work out for the best in the end, so try not to wory too much. Hugs to you till then.

I just googled this hospital and found the link below on insurance plans they accept. Also in the q&a area for insurance and billing they have phone numbers for patients who do not have insurance or insurance is not accepted you might want to go over these. I hope this helps:)

I just had MVD on January 25 with Dr Jeffrey Brown in Great Neck NY, a leading expert in TN and MVD. His office staff is fantastic, they will work with you as far as insurance goes. So far I am WITHOUT TN PAIN!!
I do have pain from the surgery, but no pain from TN. I am so glad I made the decision to have this surgery with this doctor!

I also had an MVD with Dr. Brown in NY, I highly recommend him as well.

I work for an insurance company and am seeing more and more where doctors are only taking certain patients with certain plans because of the fee structures. I am lucky though that I have top of the line insurance, so most everyone takes it.

Also some hospitals have funds for people who dont have insurance and do pro-bono work, you may want to see if they offer anything like that. It gives the hospital goodwill and a writeoff

That sounds so odd to me. Most places take private insurance before taking medicare of medicaid because they don't pay much. I seriously have never heard of this. If you really have to have medicare or medicaid, it may be in your best interest to wait the 45 days to get it if you really trust this doc to do it.

I had MVD in Dec 2012...I have BCBS and I had no problem....after I paid my ded. and out of pocket. Call if you have any ?? I live in Texas and had the surgery at Memorial/Herman at the Med. Center. Good luck.

I had to change to a Point-of-Service insurance plan to have my MVD surgery last May. Much more expensive, but better than having to pay out of pocket!

I am looking to make an appt with Dr Brown as well, if you don't mind me asking, what Ins did you have at the time you saw him?

Forget mayo…that is a long process!

Dr. Casey in Michigan , or dr. Lim in Baltimore at John Hopkins are my top two picks…

I’m guessing it’s colder in NY than it was in Florida huh!!?

IF you can travel , get the top dog!

Dr. Casey emailed back and forth with me, and it was on the table in 6 Weeks…flew from MO to MI.

saved my life…no pain now…it’s been two years.

Is the surgeon you wanted…on our list of favorites here in the doctors tab? Has he done HUNDREDS OF MVDs?

My insurance was United Healthcare. I traveled out of state to see Dr. brown, so he was out of network, but the hospital was not. From what I understand, dr. browns office does not co-bill, so whatever your insurance company pays them is what they accept.
Good luck to you!
