What is the difference between a neuropathy and ATN?

I am trying to figure out if I have ATN or a neuropathy.

I have no stabbing pain (so far and I hope it stays that way), so that rules out TN but I do have irritation that comes and goes throughout the day for the last four months.

My skin is not particularly sensitive to touch, and wind, heat, cold doesn't affect it, my issue is mostly an irritated sensation on the half of my face, mostly around the nose/lips/gum/tongue.

The trend in medical opinion is to regard atypical TN and "neuropathic trigeminal pain" as one and the same medical entity. Suggest you read the US National Institutes for Neurlogical Disorder and Stroke (NINDS) fact sheet on TN. It's linked from near the top of the main page here.

Fair disclosure: I edited, re-wrote, and coordinated professional validation of the NINDS fact sheet as well as most of the Wikipedia article on "Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia".
