Wondering what people do when it's too painful to eat as far as nutrition goes.
My pain has been horrific today, drinking and chewing brings on very bad TN pain (actually putting the food in my mouth does), enough to bring me to tears at times. Not sure why (stimulation of tongue or swallowing or what?) but it's causing me to not want to eat at all.
I looked in the supermarket at the Complan (a nutritional vitamin and mineral loaded powdered milk drink that is good for elderly people and those who are convalescing) but it had gluten in it :(
Any tips for what to try to have (I know some people here stick to a soft food diet) despite the pain?
Biscuits dipped in milk⦠More milk than biscuits or yoghurt+milk and use a large straw. Place the straw as deep as possible so that the milk and biscuit mix goes straight in without coming much in contact with the walls of ur mouth.
Hope this helps.
I drink something like you are talking about, Ensure at room temperature (which is not yummy). I am pretty sure it also has gluten it also has corn syrup, but i decided that at that moment i really need the vitamins and protein. There are other brands here and i think some are gluten free and some for diabetics... so maybe something like that exists there, but you may need to do research.
I thought i was very strange because eating sometimes causes the attacks and i read how much of an issue eating is for so many people on here but in a very bad attack if i eat something it causes the pain to worsen and then to go away for a while I read in the face pain associations book, that this is because it overloads the nerve. it has been very handy, though it is still something that causes crisis.... I am in so much pain that i am on the ground but i know i need to eat something right this minute and if i keep chewing the pain will stop... but how do i find something to chew... how do i get my body that wants to reject to accept the food.
I cant have hot, cold, or sour foods at all and also cant have super chewey or super crunchy.... so that is complicating things for me. Food has been a crisis for me through this whole ordeal so i am not sure i can be much help.
I was more fortunate than you as I could drink without much pain. My food made up of all kinds of juices. Milk and soya bean drink were my main diet. I gulped them down quickly. Thank goodness I could get back all those weights I had lost when I was better. I hope your sufferings end soon.
I drink any kind of smoothie or whatever with a straw and I take the straw as far as I can and swallow from the very back of my mouth to minimize moving my tongue and whatnot. Also, when I"m having an extended (weeks) issue I lose a fair bit of weight hehe.
I highly recommend the Nutribullet which a high powered blender that is really easy to clean and reasonably priced. It comes with a book on all sorts of smoothies that you can make which are delicious. I add protein powder which is gluten, soy, dairy free such as plant fusion or vega one, almond milk, fruit, veggies and flax seed meal. Drink with a straw on my pain free side and I am full for hours. One serving of the vega one provides 50 percent daily intake of vitamins and minerals. I buy the protein power on line through amazon.com because it is difficult to find in stores and usually I can find a deal where shipping is free. If you really want to eat something I recommend the Larabar which is relatively soft - also gluten, soy, dairy free. I eat the carrot cake in very tiny pieces. Tastes awesome! Hope the info helps you.
