Can't Eat

Hello Fellow Sufferer's,

I haven't seen any mention of or details of what to do when you just can't eat. I have GPN that only effects my tongue and the triggers are eating and speaking at times. This is my third bout with this affliction as it generally goes away hopefully this time also. This bout started June and about 10 days ago I couldn't eat, I had to resort to Ensure, or Carnation instant breakfast. It lasted for about 4 days.

Now it came back where I've been on a liquid diet 5 days now, I've added plain soups meaning nothing tangible.Ice cream, yogurts again very plain. Now I know anyone with GPN this is a common symptom that we have to resort to when the mighty tongue flares up. I feel OK but I did lose a few pounds and again I never saw any discussions on diet. I know there's got to be more to eat than what I'm eating now. Sure would like to have my regular Friday night Pizza !!

Rick

I have started a group for ideas for recipes for when eating is difficult. Any ideas anyone? I know what you mean about pizza!

Hi Tippir, there seems to be a two pronged approach 1) Liquidise normal foods or 2) Use one of the Liquid shake meal replacement products. If you want non nutritionally sound check out our discussion on the featured page :). Some favourites are icy poles, hot chocolate, dohnuts etc..

Smoothies can be very tasty and nutritious. I put peanut butter in to add calories.

Hi Smiley,

Thanks for your response, how can I view the featured page you mentioned ? is there a title ?

Hi Mary,

Thanks for your reply. I asked my wife where I can pick up these smoothies and I love peanut butter. Thanks again, Rick

Hi Smiley,

I found the link and got some good ideas. I asked my wife to make me the cream of zuccini soup. I find it easy to just add things to the carnation instant breakfast packages. Thanks for your input.

Hi Rick,

I don’t know if this will help or not, but maybe worth a try. Have you tried just putting small pieces in your mouth and letting them sit. I found this to work if I really wanted chips or something similar that is hard. I don’t chew, just wait and it will eventually turn to mush that I can swallow. The downside of course is that it takes forever, but the upside is that you get to taste the chip or whatever it is that you’ve been craving. I’m not sure if it would work for pizza though.

Otherwise, as Smiley said liquidise, nutritional shakes, etc…

Your right on hmschmom !! When I'm eating and getting shocks I just slow down and I'm able to swallow without as many shocks. The shocks are inconsistent, I can eat some meals w/o shocks and then w/o any reason come back again. It's very frustrating. My problem is only with the tongue, swallowing, coughing is no problem and there is no problem with my ears. I saw my neurosurgeon and he called this Glossoneuroalgia and not GPN. He wants to do the MVD surgery and said it's a 75% success rate. If it doesn't work I just go back to pills. I'm still thinking about it I just saw him this past Friday.

Wishing you well, Rick
