How do you eat?

I am having difficulty eating. The only thing I can tolerate is totally smooth, processed foods (ie: nothing grainy). The only thing I've found so far that doesn't cause excruciating pain is room temperature milkshakes and baby food. How much baby food do I need to eat to maintain a healthy calorie range? I figured out that I'm getting maybe 720 calories a day. I need 2.5x that. Anyone?

Have you ever tried a high quality meal replacement drink? I find Garden of Life RAW to be palatable (my favorite is Vanilla Chai) and you can mix it with whatever you like...I use almond milk. The protein one is a little grainy but the regular meal replacement mix is pretty good. You could run it through a blender to make it smoother if needed and they sell individual packets to try before committing to a large container.

Sweet! Thanks, shadow2! It's available at the local Herb Shop! I love almond milk. I make my own. :)

Ensure to get vitamins and calories…

Tried lidocaine mouthwash RX .?

How about mushy muesli ( no nuts) mixed with yoghurt? I think we spell yoghurt differently down under but it works for me.

Hi there,

Yoplait make a yogurt called 'whips'. If you're not familiar with it, it's yogurt but it's consistency is light and airy, like a mousse dessert. I keep a supply of them in the fridge all the time, they're easy to eat and I find them soothing when my mouth is burning which happens a lot. Also, I've never tried them but I think those Ensure drinks have all the daily nutrients you need. The meal replacement drink shadow2 suggested sounds even better though.

Obsidian: I imagine the Yoplait Whips are pretty much mush once they're room temp? I have tried them before, but with the cold sensitivity I've been having, I haven't even opened the Greek yogurt I have on hand.

KcDancer: I have Ensure on my grocery list. I have been using Anbasol or orajel on my gums and inner cheek before I eat.

Catwoman: Thanks for the suggestion! I have been using baby oatmeal. 1/2 a cup fills me up, so I've been mixing it with everything.

Hi BBB

The yoplait whips aren't too bad at room temperature. I ate one yesterday that had been out of the fridge for a while and it was a little less whipped, but still edible. Hope you're doing better today.

Try some protein powder in your shakes. it will be some added calories too.

I do better if I don't talk, and did too much today...Muscle in my cheek has been clenched up for hours, and my tongue is burning. Is that part of TN? Feels really weird. Tomorrow, it's all coming out with paper and pen.

Thanks, Charlie. It's on my grocery list. :)

To up my calories in a pain crisis, i allow chocolate to melt on the end of my tongue, I am totally unable to open mouth, chew or swallow when the pain is doing it's worse. Not good nutrition, but when its so bad, who cares.............................

Jackie, I had a friend send me a box of chocolate through the mail. I melted it a few seconds in the microwave so I could have some! :)

Thinking about it overnight, what about tinned or canned peaches or fruit salad? They're going to taste just as good at room temperature.

I have some of both, Catwoman. I need to eat the bananas before they go bad...Two bunches was a bit much! lol

I just finished a bowl of baby oatmeal with mashed banana for breakfast, and Mum said she'd whip up some mash potatoes with blender boudin sausage for lunch, so will be having either cranberry sauce or blender carrots as a side, and a milkshake for dinner with mixed fruit.

I need to check the cabinet...in the mood for some tuna salad...I'll just have to put it through the blender to smooth it out. I'm getting worried that I'm not getting enough protein, but the store run won't be until Wednesday....I need to boil some chicken today, and run it through the blender too.

Yesterday was bad. I could barely open my mouth. It felt like it wanted to lock up whenever I yawned or tried to eat. My youngest brother and his wife came over, and I couldn't even talk by the time they showed up.

If I could come across the seas and give you a hug I would! I know that feeling although it's more likely to be a meat cleaver through the toungue when I talk.

I was eating my muesli and yoghurt yesterday morning, tolerating the stabs every other bite and then I got the mother of all shock/burns!!! I just dissolved in tears, it was so unfair! It's the shock of it I think, as much as the pain. I didn't see it coming.

If you have a blender, you can blend up any fruit.

Oh, Cat. How awful! No warnings at all for when it's going to hit is unbearable. I have pretty much slept all day today just trying to get some form of escape. I've only had this for 10 days. I cannot imagine how any of you have been dealing with this for years, although I watched my mother put up with it for three before she finally got treatment. All I want to do is cry, and even that hurts! I feel like such a wimp. :\

Tawny, I know. :) It's the thought of eating without pain that has made my mind go blank. How long have you been dealing with TN? I'm new to all of this.

I have added tilapia fish to my menu. It is completely flakey and no chewing is required. I bake it in the toaster oven and it is wonderful. I will add any new discoveries as I come across them. Hang in there my lovies.
