What causes pitting edema?

I’ve got pitting edema in my ankles or should isay cancels now. It’s travelled all the way up to my knees and it hurts. My gp and pain doc are ping pong me back and forth. I have a feeling it is being caused by the lyrica, and I’ll be up set if I need to stop it. The reason I think this because I run out of my lyrica for a couple says and the swelling went down. Thanks guys

Ask your pharmacist if this is the culprit!!!!

I seriously hope this is a side effect as if it isn't it can be a sign of very serious health problems such as kidney disease and congestive heart failure. If it is caused by the Lyrica then you need to stop it - pitting oedema is caused by accumulating fluid and it means that your body isn't being efficient at carrying fluid around (which is why it stagnates at the lowest point due to gravity - your legs).

Kari, From data on rxlist.com, Edema is listed as one of the side effects of Lyrica (discontinuation of trials in ~1-5% of patients, adverse reaction in peripheral edema in 9-12% for doses of 300 to 600 mg per day). Thus it is possible that you're seeing a side effect, but by no means certain. As noted by others, I believe you would be wise to prompt your physicians to check for other causes besides the Lyrica, especially if your present dose is on the low side of the range.

Thanks Red again. No it’s on the high side at 400mg a day. I’m waiting for a call back from the nurse on what to do. My knees are swimming in water at this point and it hurts like a demon. So frustrating with side effects. As I just had blood work done all was fine and good I’m really leaning towards the lyrica now as the cause.
