Trileptal

I’m taking 600mg Trileptal a day it’s really been doing the job until this week I’ve been getting little break through of shocks my sodium is some what low . Has anybody got high BP with this med? I’m sure my dr will be switching it the 30th when I go see her. Does anybody know a good med that works and doesn’t give a lot of side effects. I knows all the meds have side effects I’m getting tired of switching every few months I was on gabepab befor this one… God bless

Hi Donna, I am taking the max dose 2,400mg/day of trileptal. I have tapered up slowly every few month as needed. Once I taper up I again get the coverage I need. I have been on it for a couple of years. I have the fewest side effects of any med I have ever been on. My sodium has been low also (126) so I am not allowed to drink any free water…so I just drink low cal gatorade and eat lots of salt. My blood pressure usually runs about 130/90…a little high but, my doctor isn’t concerned since we know the cause. I have gotten excellent coverage from trileptal (until now, I just had my nerve stimulator removed due to infection) . I still don’t plan on switching any time soon. If needed we will just incease the other meds I take with it ( amytripyline, baclofen, cymbalta)…hope this helps!!

I have saved a list from here of "meds that work"

I stayed with trileptal for the pain - and had lidocaine patches for my face for breakthru pain

Had MVD cause hated trileptal and 2 other meds!

Lisa, do you have any headaches with Trileptal ? I really do like Trileptal if she’d just raise the does to 900 like I said I’m starting to get little shock break through … I’m only on Trileptal and avitan I only take the avitan at night…

Donna, I'm on 750mg 2x per day. Your dose is pretty low.

I get the opposite. I am getting low blood pressure with this one. 85 over 58. I still get some breakthrough pain and have a lidocaine cream, which helps but I don't think I can go higher up on trileptal as the side effects are hellish. However, the side effects are supposed to be less than most other drugs. ARRG

I also take 2400 mg… But yes, I get the bad headaches, and take Imitrex when I need to. Your dose is pretty low, ur doctor has wiggle room…breakthrough is NOT abnormal and I think we all get it from time to time and some more than other… I’ve been n the Trileptal for about 15 years with minimal problems…just be sure you don’t quit taking it without seeing ur doctor…that can be super duper bad !!!

Do you have sodium probablys mine is very low cause of the Trileptal ?

Ya know, I’ve never had it tested…whoopsie. I do take a BP med (super low dose) though. It is probably low because I crave salt…to the point I’d lick a salt lick.

Oh yea you sure get it checked to low can be very dangerous …

It seems like they work for me for about 6 weeks and then the break through pain starts. Started on topamax, then the neurotin, and now the trileptal, which for me has not been as effective at all, I may go back to the neurotin at a higher dosage. I have TN type 2 so I dont get the blasts of pain as much as constant pain that fluctuates from my eye to neck.

Donna…I have gotten a headache occasionally with an increase but, nothing that lasts once I am used to the increased dose. It is worth the better months ahead.
