These meds are cousins - call your pharmacist to find out about more details!!
When I started with Tregratol 4 years ago it took a week or two to get it working properly. I had to take about 5 to 6 x 200mg a day to build up the level in my system and then the TN pain went away completely. I then weaned back on the quantities slowly over 2 weeks till I was taking 2 x 200mg a day. From then on I just took 2 x 200mg a day and I was pain free for just over 3 and a half years. Then I started getting little sharp electric shocks 2 or 3 times a day in my left lower jaw. After a few days I thought I should increase the threshold at which the Tegratol was working, but it didn't work. I increased it a little more to no avail. Then the big one came, not the same as if there was no Tegratol, but still a nasty horrible electric shock which lasted 8-10 secs. So the Tegratol was holding back the big ones but still allowing the smaller shocks through. I say small, but still big enough stop me from talking, eating and brushing my teeth. Increasing the Tegratol to 4 x 300mg and adding Baclofen 3 x 10mg a day hasn't really helped. I manage to get through each day without any talk, passing messages in writing and maybe eating something once a day. It's affecting my work now as I am a self-employed photographer - can't not speak to the client. For the first time in over 4 years I'm waiting to see a neurologist. Hope that helps Donna.
FYI - the Trileptal breaks down in the body and turns into Tegretol... it is just longer lasting than teg. So sorry you are having problems with the Trilep... def check with your pharmicist

Actually, Cris... did a doctor tell you that Trileptal breaks down in the body and turns into Tegretol? The two meds are closely related in their physical chemistry, but their metabolic products are different enough to detect in blood tests. Apart from that quibble, a lot of patients seem to have somewhat less severe side effects with Trileptal than with Tegretol.
