My tn has gone through several changes as I wait to see the neurologist in late June (welcome to Manitoba medicine).
Sometimes talking would trigger it, sometimes touching my face would trigger it, sometimes eating would trigger it. The pain itself is always lightning/burning just under the ear.
Now, I am at a point where I have one tooth that sends shocks to my jaw/ear area whenever I touch it. It is the fourth tooth in from my last molar (no wisdom teeth). If I rub my tongue over it -- pain. If my face touches it while talking -- pain. If I brush it -- pain.
Sometimes, I put my finger on it and hold it while the pain flashes to my ear, and then it stops for a little while, until I remove my finger and touch it again. Or, sometimes I brush my teeth anyway, and tolerate the shooting/burning pain for the sake of dental hygiene.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? In one tooth?
I was at the dentist in March and had xrays, and they didn't say anything about that tooth. Does it sound like a tooth problem, or just another tn appearance?
I have pain in just one tooth..It is a bottom canine? tooth on my left side. It throbs, then is very sore to touch, and sometimes sharp pain or sometimes just aches..I'm on amitriptyline which seems to help...When it first started hurting I went to 4 different dentists who all took xrays and told me there is nothing wrong with it..It doesn't have any fillings in it nor has it had a root canal or crown..I think it is cracked in the root but they all say no..I grind my teeth so it doesn't help the tooth pain....I have had the cold test done also.. I take ibuprofen for the breakthrough pain and it works..I hope you find out if it is your tooth or TN...

I have the same thing as you when it comes to a tooth that is a trigger. You have to relate to it as a trigger and be thankful its not like many years ago when the dentists would remove several back teeth thinking that would help but the problem is not the teeth it is the TN nerve acting up. Bless you and hope it will ease up soon.
Thanks Jeanne, I keep thinking I should go back to the dentist and have them take another x-ray, but I know that the x-ray showed nothing a few months ago, so I am going to just relax and hopefully it will move along on its own.

I have some of what you are saying. My upper left side is where I get the lightening pain. Then one day the pain changed and it turned out I also had a minor infection that didn't show up on the x-ray. But, as I said, it was a different pain and the antibiotics took care of the pain. I was also having low grade fevers and chills and finally had my endodontist do surgery. But the infection really woke my TN up and now I have more lightening shocks in a few teeth that have no roots. I've had root canals or surgeries on them so I know it's the TN. If I think if MIGHT be an infection, I try pain pills and antibiotics, if they work then I know it's the tooth. If the pain continues I know it's TN. Brushing those teeth are difficult to say the least and I have other triggers, such as on the top of my head which will sent a shock down into the tooth. I've read that there may be a period where pain stops because the nerves have bee "overloaded" then when they have rested they send out pain impulses again. This may be what happens when you touch your tooth until the pain subsides.
I have pain in a tooth that had a root canal almost a year ago. I went back to the endontist last week who again xrayed and examined it and confirmed, once again, that the pain was a result of my TN. TN is such a mind game. I am constantly trying to figure out if I have another issue or if once again the culprit is TN. I find that extra strength Advil helps with that pain if I take it with my other meds. I also tend to clench or grind in my sleep and the endontist thought that perhaps the pressure of that set off TN pain from rhat area. I hope you find peace amd relief.
Hi Cheryl, I too had one tooth that was in horrid pain, when I saw the dentist it was definitely sensitive BUT X-rays were clear. Since my mvd, no pain in that tooth.
When it was bad I coated it in orajel , it helped take the edge off.
I spent months wondering if it was just my tooth but endodontist and dentist said nope, just TN.
It is a mind game.
I hope you find relief soon, Mimi
Before I was diagnoses I had all but one tooth on my upper right side were root canals. Then a few had a second root canal and a couple of surgeries. When the pain would not go away my dentist sent me to a neurologist. He has a couple of patients with TN. She put me on Trileptal and the pain was gone. My story is a common one. It feels like it has to be a tooth. I also put on lidocaine gel on my gums and that helps the TN pain, but it doesn't help if it's an abcess. It is mind game. And all you want it to do is stop.
Yeah before I was diagnosed with TN, I had a molar that to touch made3 me cry. and the roof of the mouth so hot if felt like lave in there. All I could do is sip soupf from the can, without heating. After several visits to the dentist and xrays and pounding on the tooth, he assured me it was not a bad tooth. That tooth always hurts so I avoid chewing on that side and when i brust i avoid that tooth but let the tooth paste sit against the tooth longer.
I came so close to telling the dentist to pull the tooth, but it wouldnt have stopped the pain. My pain is like your in the tooth and under the ear. there isnt a day go by that its not like lightening shoothing over the tooth and ear.
