Tooth pain ..hoping someone can help

Hello Everyone,

Every time I have a flare up. I always end up with pain in one particular tooth that lasts for days.

Sends me to the dentist and for the 7th time he finds nothing in that tooth. I even make a trip to the endo who finds nothing. I have even found a few times it is sensitive to hot things. The two teeth next to that tooth has had root canals, not sure I needed them. Am I losing my mind? I feel like there is something they must be missing and why if it's a nerve does my medicine not help?

:Hoping someone can shed some light...think I might be going crazy!

Hi wendyjo, you’re not going crazy, I have the exact same thing…thought I was crazy too, many X-rays dentist visits and endo proved it’s not the tooth!
the pain went away after my MVD in April and returned a few months ago, my neuro explained that it is the nerve …as for the medicine working… its a dance…trying to find a dose or combo of meds that work. I have yet to find consistent relief.
(( hugs )) Mimi

Thank you Mimi! I am on last bought of medicine before they want me to consider mvd. It's so helpful when you hear from someone that has gone thru the same thing. I told my husband need to go to the dentist Monday as I cried knowing it's not my tooth but thinking somehow it must be. My dentist is going to ban me from coming...lol. Do you have tn1 or 2? Also did ibuprofen help at all for the tooth pain?

Hi wendyjo, my pain is also in my teeth and I thought I was going crazy. I went to 2 dentist, 2 endorse and oral surgeon, which it was him who told me about tn. I think I have tn1, but since I do not have trigger point my current neuor says I have tn2. I was taking 2-3 advils every 4 hours before teg. At this point I get about 10 attacks a day, from 30 a day. I know exactly how you feel. I have been dealing with this for 7 months now and I pray every night just to have my life back. This has changed my social and work life. Just take a day at a time.

Thanks Darlene for your response. Today is a tough day with tooth pain. Just doesn't want to let up. I know how you feel about your social life. I have been dealing with this for a year. My social life is almost non existent and I have went to working part time. I too would give anything to have my life back. Does the teg help at all. They just upped my dose.

I will keep you in my prayers

Most of my pain has also always come from a single upper tooth. I did have TN pain in other teeth (upper and lower), plus gums and a spot on my cheek that is actually connected somehow to that one tooth. I had and MVD 6 weeks ago and everything is gone from my lower nerve branch, all the "shocks" are gone, but what I still experience is TN pain in that one tooth plus the cheek area and gum area connected to that tooth. It's different now though. Rather than shocks, it's more of a constant come and go "pressure", like that tooth is in a vice. A better way to explain it for most of the time, it's like I have a bruise on that single tooth/gum/cheek area. If I push on it or trigger it, it feels like I'm pushing on a bruise and then when I stop, it stops but sometimes stays. It is starting to fade away though now that my nerve is healing so I would classify my "pain " now as a 0-2 on the scale. I'm still on my full 1200mg of Tegretol though. I think when it's gone for several days in a row, I will be weaning down then on the meds. The Tegretol always controlled my pain well but my breakthrough pain would always involve that one tooth. Not sure if this info helps or not other than just to know that there is someone else who "feels your pain". Best wishes to you.

I, too, was SURE my back left molar was absessed--the pain was in a very specific spot..very intense. But it would come and go and that did seem unusual for a bad tooth. My dentist could not find anything wrong with the tooth... and then I had a full-blown attack with all three branches of the nerve firing and I realized something else was going on!! Google face pain and voila! up popped tn. My doc concurred--went on tegretol and it controlled it right away!! So far so good all things considered...

Hi,

My ATN is around one particular tooth--a bottom back molar. The pain is in other teeth, top and bottom, in my jaw, cheek and my ear. But it always starts in that tooth. I went as far as to have a root canal done on it and it still hurts. My pain is under control with 40mgs Amitriptyline but that tooth is still sensitive. I still sometimes think there must be a physical answer but there isn't.
