To pull out or not a teeth

hi

most of my pain is from my teeth that been under some dental work.

i have now 3-4 painful tooth that seems to look normal under dental examination.

in the last 3-4 mounth i have another painfull tooth after filling replacement on the side that i don't have TN .

it seems that my options with the new painful tooth is root canal or extraction.

root canal frighten me a lot beacuse root canal is what start all my ATN

extraction is also an operation that cause some damage to the nerve and after the extraction i will have to do dental implant (also massive dental job)

i don't know what to do root canal or extraction ???

i also consider to extract other painful tooth because all the pain is from teeth

do you have some success with tooth extraction and dental implant ????

i know that ATN can mimic tooth pain but my pain is very specific in specific teeth that been under dental job.

Hi..ask your dental people what they know about TN. Before I was diagnosed, I lost several teeth that I'm now sure were ok.

DON’T PULL!!! Cause more then likely you’ll spend all that money pulling the teeth, your pain won’t go down at all. And then you have to pay to get dentures or whatever to fill the space and eating will never be the same. Its costly, painful and won’t help a lick. I seriously don’t advise it. I have teeth pain also, I have a bottom front and top front tooth that hurts like a bastard for months to year then switches to the other. And when I hurts I’m begging my parents to lend me money to get a partial plate after I get the tooth pulled and they won’t let me.

how can i know if the pain is from the tooth or from the ATN ???

all my pain is from teeth that been under dental job , no pain from healthy teeth, no pain that switch teeth

from what i know an ATN tooth pain is on regaler teeth, move from tooth to tooth and the pain is in other places in the face other then the tooth.......

for me the pain is only in the teeth and its start Immediately after dental job (root canal or filing)

after the dental job the doctor say everything is fine but i left with constant pain

some recent dental job didn't cause me constant pain and all the dental job i did until 5 years ago never cause me constant pain.

unfortunately i have bad teeth and all the time i need to feel here feel there......

Hi Tomey, My case specifically is dental work related from an injection and wisdom tooth extraction.. my tn is 4 teeth and tongue related only. extraction of those 4 teeth for me would have made no difference and could have made things way worse... here are a few links describing how dental nerve damage can occur other than just extractions.. I hope the first one was already ruled out in your case? good luck

Tomey,

I’m so sorry that you are having so many problems with your teeth. I have an idea of what you are going through because a few years ago, I was hit by a car and landed on my head. As a result, I have a number of fractured teeth and have had lots of dental work done: extractions, root canals and crowns. My dentist and endodontist have been very conservative in their treatments and they have only worked on teeth that have radiographic/physical evidence of damage. They have been able to stabilize those teeth, but I continue to have pain in those areas because of TN.

I have had two teeth extracted. When I had the first one pulled, it was the most painful experience of my life and was also the start of my trigeminal pain. I don’t recommend it.

I can understand why pulling the tooth might seem like a solution to the problem, especially when you are in so much pain. Unfortunately, having the tooth extracted may not stop the pain and could even potentially make it much, much worse. If I were you, I would not have the tooth pulled unless the doctors determine that it is absolutely impossible to save the tooth. In my case, the teeth that were extracted were broken in half, so I didn’t have a choice.

Another concern is that getting a tooth implant seems like a very invasive procedure and one that would likely aggravate the TN as well, though I don’t have any experience with that personally.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck with your decision.

Take care,
Chris

Tomey,

I forgot to say that I think Jackie's idea to get a second opinion from a neurologist is a good one. My orofacial pain specialist told me that I shouldn't have any more dental work done unless all of my doctors (dentist, endodontist, orofacial pain specialist and neurologist) all agree that it is needed.

This is a very hard decision to make, I know. It's especially challenging to know what the best course of action is when you are dealing with a condition like TN that sometimes defies all logic. I'll be sending you good thoughts.

Take care,

Chris

DONT PULL YOUR TEETH!!! Its not your teeth! That is how all my uneccessary dental work started. I thought it was my teeth I filled the cavities on the left side of my face all my teeth from my incisor back to my molars. Next I root canalled all of them one at a time only then to pull each one one at a time. All along it was TN now I have NO TEETH on the left side of my upper mouth from my incisor back and I still have PAIN! Be careful go to a Maxofacial facial dentist who is VERY familar with TN before you root canal or pull any more teeth.

I spent 8K on teeth that did not need any dental work done to them. Under examination and XRays my teeth looked fine but my dentist went with the SYMPTOMS rather than the physical proof, leaving me toothless and then diagnosed with TN. I even pulled teeth after my diagnosis. I just thought no way could this be what is happening to me and it was TN all along.

I hope this doesnt scare you, I just hate to see anyone go thru what I went thru only to find out it was the TN all along.

God Bless
