This may just be me, but has anyone experienced that exercise causes TN to flare up??
Between TN flare up when exercising and Lyrica weight gain, I am a continual Weight Watchers member and occasional drop out! I just tell people I am fat and sassy, just wish I could add pain free to that description.
I am just recently diagnosed with TN by an ENT. I am assuming he is correct. I just made an appointment with a Neurologist. . However, I can say a few weeks ago after hitting the gym pretty hard my pain area began to pulsate and then maybe an hour or so later I was in tremendous spasms of pain that I couldn't stop. I wasn't on any meds at the time. Now I'm taking Gabapentin and I finally went back to the gym yesterday. Afterwards, nothing happened but today I have felt more than a few stabs in my pain area. I think it's possible there might be a connection. However, what I have learned in all this is that everyone is different and reacts differently to everything concerning TN such as meds, foods, treatment, and excercise.
It's funny.. I need to exercise to help me deal with Fibromyalgia, (in addition to keeping the ability to exercise with less pain interfering with it) but TN acts up when I do exercise... If it isn't one thing, it's another. I was on tegretol for TN, but it was giving strange thoughts--so I just went off of it a couple days ago. It's gonna get bad here before too long...
I hear ya Molly... I may not do Weight Watchers, but it's so hard to try to lose weight when we are either on meds or don't feel well enough to workout... My meds don't cause weight gain, but I don't lose weight either...Thankfully. Not losing either, but least I am not gaining anymore at the moment. I too would love to be pain free =).

That's great that you were diagnosed, Mikey. I am still awaiting my appointment with the ENT doctor. I get to have a mri too--just waiting for both things to be scheduled.. Are you noticing a big difference in pain with the gabapentin? I wouldn't know what foods triggers TN or how to track it..I have figured out hot water and sound affects TN, but that's as far as that goes..

I have TN, Fibromyalgi and Peripheral Neuropathy, all central nervous system problems. I notice they all flare up with activity. My personal feeling is the activity excites the nerves. Especially with the Peripheral Neuropathy. Do you remember when you went roller skating or a long bike ride and had that continual feeling of motion hours later. Well I get pains, shocks and what I call internal tremors that roll on hours or even a day or two after I am very active.
Could someone with some medical background tell me if this makes sense or if I need to order a straight jacket in my size?
I don't believe i've been properly diagnosed with TN yet but all my symptoms seem to relate. When I exercise or get really hot and sweaty, my pain area pulsates and seems to get almost inflamed. It's my whole nose area. It sucks because I want to exercise to get my mind off of it, which makes me feel good about it, but when i'm finished, I just look like a hot mess!
I get flare ups with most activity now. I used to be able to keep my mind off the pain by staying busy. Few months ago I could walk a few miles. Now climbing a flight of stairs is a real dizzy effort. Now noise is added to the list of triggers for my TN. I have hyperacusis ever since taking Gabapentin. Just getting up and down is real effort and raises the frequency and intensity of the stabbing pains.
I now must pace myself, budget my energy so to speak. ie; if I want to spend 1/2 in my garden I must give up getting dressed or groomed or some other thing. I just do not have it to do both. I am up for an hour and down fo 2.
My mouth, teeth, jaw, ear hurt so bad most days that I am on a no chew diet. Trust me this is a fast way to loose weight. I am dwindling away in between flare ups I eat as much as my little stomach will let me. Lot of nausea with the pain, often get migraines with vomitting. After a day of that my stomach is so sore it does not want even water, then I risk dehydration. I can only drink liquid at room temp with a straw even when my pain level is low.
So I have to say yes on this one for me. Activity is definatly a Trigger.

I complete identify with each of you...
Hippie--I get that motion sensation too..You aren't crazy. If you are, I guess I need a straight jacket too..
Jennifer-- I totally relate.. I try to exercise to enter another world and just spend some time exercising---destressing and enjoying "get away" time, but end up paying for it... I try to only do a little at a time, but I have to do something..just don't know how to exercise without it triggering tn pain.. =/ real bummer!
Tree--Getting up and down does require alot of energy nowdays for me.. It's really hard. It's hard to even do dishes...everything just gets me super dizzy. (I stopped taking my vinpocetine sadly when I went on a "no night-time pills strike" for about a week..) I found out that Tegretol is not helpful a week ago--cannot handle the side effects. It used to be very difficult to eat for TN reasons, then I went on Tegerol which helped me eat w/o pain. When it comes to eating, it's gonna be a huge battle between tummie issues and TN. It sure is a bumpy ride, isn't it?
