Exercising and TN

Hi everyone. As I am new to this could anyone tell me if it is safe to exercise. I am awaiting an MRI as there is a very strong history of brain aneurysm. I love organic gardening and I think I may have set the TN off again when I was turning sods and getting the garden ready to plant after the winter. ( has come to a stop half way due to TN )I also love fast walking . I used to run but those days are now over due to spinal herniation and degenerative discs . One the plus side my new meds Lyrica also helps with the sciatica from that also.

I'm sorry that you are facing this disease and I know how many questions you get when you are first diagnosed. I would advise you to wait until you have the MRI and talk to your doctor before you do any type of physical activity. When I exercise it does cause the TN and GN to flare up. I am not sure why but I am not sure why so many things cause the flare ups! Everyone is different and things that cause some of us pain do not bother others. Also, if you are given any medication that helps you may be able to go back to some of the activities you enjoy. I wish you all the best and hope you are able to get the help you need!

Thank you for your reply. Any advice is wonderful Xxx

Yes, definitely get your doctor's clearance first. I teach spin classes and kept it up during my 9 months of TN symptoms (had a successful MVD 18 months ago). Honestly, it was always hard the first 5 minutes or so but once I got my heart rate elevated, I actually escaped the pain during my hour classes and it would last for a couple of hours afterwards. I was on meds but always had breakthrough pain that could still often be triggered. My neuro told me that since the exercise I did was intense, I was getting that "runner's high" or endorphins that helped my meds work better during and then for a while after exercise. I was able to keep teaching my 4 classes a week up until surgery. I did have to take off 6 weeks of teaching spin for my recovery but kept walking as early as 4 days after surgery. Best wishes to you.

Thank you Mybell . Great to see such a successful story. I was nervous in case the intense exercised would trigger something. I will talk to my doctor next week when hes back from holidays. Again, thank you.

I exercise. But cold and wind set my TN off in a bad way. So weather depending I still go for long walks and do yard work. I bought a treadmill so I have something to do in the winter.

It takes time to get to know your triggers. And I find that every day is different and I am constantly looking for correlations and reasons for the pain.

Just take it slow and see how you are. It is very, very important to get a lot of rest and be gentle with yourself. Stress, anxiety and lack of sleep are triggers too.

Like mybell, I am eased by exercise, or whenever my circulation increases in the face. I keep a tiny massage roller handy forjust that purpose. Cannot wach TV with this thing, and it get btter with exercise: There are upsides to this s**t.
