Teeth Pain

I think I got mine at CVS. I don't remember it being difficult to find. I do remember that it came in a lower dose so I had to take 2-3 pills to get to 60mg.

Some of the name brand cough medicine that comes in pill form will contain dextromethorphan as its only active ingredient. You might have to go with something like that.

You could call a few pharmacies and see what they have, though I've found that many pharmacists aren't as aware of the OTC meds they sell compared to actual prescriptions.

I hope you're able to find it!

Thanks a lot!!!

I just read that dextromethorphan can interact with some antidepressants such as Prozac, paxil, etc and can potentially trigger a dangerous serotonin syndrome. I take nortriptyline , and I will call my pharmacist tomorrow and see if the combination is safe or not. I just wanted to mention this, because so many of us are on either the newer or older antidepressants for their antidepressant effects and/or their elimination of neuropathic pain effects. I think Crystal , if I am not mistaken, you are taking amitriptyline so obviously, you had no problems with the combination... but I think since we are all all individuals and react differently it is better to be safe than sorry, so everyone who wants to try this, should perhaps consult their pharmacist before hand for any possible interactions with your other meds you are taking.

Wow, I was reading about it and evidently at high doses it can cause dissociative hallucinations. I hope 60mg is not considered a high dose. Thanks again for letting me and everyone else now know about this. Has any body else used this dextromethorphan pill before/during/after a dental procedure that you know of on here? I would like to hear if they had a positive experience as well. I'm just a bit hesitant because you stated the root canal was done on your good side. I would feel a bit more confident if you had a root canal on your bad side and had no post root canal added pain. I'm sorry if I sound negative, I am just being honest with my concerns. But heck, if this works, (and I will go to the pharmacy tomorrow and get some of this)this is a HUGE blessing to everyone that we don't have to be afraid of dental work anymore making things worse for us!!!

Sorry scared & angry just saw your post. My surgery is being done by Dr. lee at the Unn of Penn. My MRI was normal but they usually don’t go by MRI.Story after story on here of clear MRI then to have the surgery and they find all kinds of stuff. I just cannot take fighting with the meds and break thru pain nor can my family. I have had this almost two years and I have had enough.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to add something regarding Dentists....I know there are Dentists out there that are very aware of what TN is and how to carefully work on our mouths to hopefully not cause more pain or cause our pain to flare up again. (I went to a dentist in 2001 when my symptoms first started and he had gone out of the country like 6 months prior to me walking in his office for a seminar on this. And he was the one that told me that I probably had TN and what steps to take. Sorry to say that 24 different doctors over a course of 10 years couldn't figure it out - sad to say) I don't know how many are out there, but maybe calling around and asking Dentist Offices if they are familiar with TN before we have our teeth worked on would benefit us.

Just a thought.....Jodi

Hi Wendyjo ,What date is your surgery?, I will say a prayer for you. Although, I don't think you will need it, I heard good things about University of Penn. And I did read in Striking Back, that if you want to get the surgery, you want to do it in the first 7 years because the outcome is likely to be more successful. I am very happy for you. That surgery, I don't believe is an option for me, unfortuneatly, because we know that this was caused by a dental nerve injury , of the trigeminal peripheral nerves. Glad to know that insurances cover that surgery after 2 yrs, I was thinking you had to suffer even longer before insurances authorize an expensive surgery. Best wishes to you!!!!!

I have a lot of tooth pain-in fact that's what I thought it was at first but dentist couldn't find anything wrong. Then I went to an endodontist and he came up for a name for it, TN. Called my primary care dr and she refered me to a neurologist. My problem is that all my lower teeth on the left side of my jaw hurt and back to under my ear. I'm on Lyrica and it doesn't seem to be helping....
