Teeth Pain

If you have had severe neuropathic tooth pain or severe tooth sensitivity, which medication took the pain away for you?

Good question!! I'm looking forward to people replying to this one. I'm sick to death of getting tooth pain from even tap (faucet) water.

Tegretol did it for me.

Amitriptyline 40mgs. My lifesaver :)

Amitriptyline did not work at all for me. Hope we will get more answers as I am suffering TERRIBLY. Different things help all of us so please keep responding people.

I had terrible teeth pain its where it first started...so I went from dentist again and again sadly mine was an idiot and did root canals and pulled. Anyway I take 75 mg of Nortriptyline a day It has helped a lot! I had to work up to the dosage and even at 50 mg I still felt pain Im glad I stuck in and upped it!

Many use lidocaine mouthwash… Putting the the nerves to sleep, works for many! Prescription…call it in to dr. Or dentist…no need for appt!

I have found Lyrica guite good, did'nt take pain completely , but when I upped the dose, had some side effects, different for everyone, yea dentists useless, I had teeth pulled also , before I got some answers.

Thanks wendyjo, how much tegretol did it take??

Thanks justjane37, glad to hear this... I am taking noritriptyline which is pretty much the same as amitriptyline however I am only taking 25mg of it. In a week, I will go up to 50mg and in another wk, I will finally go up to 75mg of it. Right now at only 25mg of it, it is not doing anything for me.

How much amitriptyline were you taking kath jaco? I know, the teeth pain is horrible, and now I have a new pain to go with it, burning gums as well, all only on the right side of my face.

Thank you, thank you, thank you jstagrl29!!!!!!! You just gave me hope :) I am supposed to get a tooth pulled March 21, actually it was supposed to be March 7th but I postponed it. I'm only on 25mg of Nortriptyline, and I started to think, this stuff wont help, but now I am motivated to stay the course and hopefully I too will see results at 75mg. I don't know why I have to wait an entire week to increase it though, from 25, to 50, to 75, that's an entire 3 wks time....Please keep your experiences and suggestions coming folks because as everyone knows, when it comes to TN pain, one size does not fit all so to speak!!!

Just to summarize, this is what we have so far, and I don't know about you, but I feel more hopeful. The following have taken the nasty teeth pain away: Tegretol, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, lidocaine mouthwash, and lyrica (took some of the pain away). I am very confused about one thing, and maybe some one out there can shed some insight on this. Simple advil takes my teeth pain away at times, so I thought it was legitimate unhealthy teeth, so I spent $250 with an endodontist yesterday who took detailed special xrays and he said all but one of my teeth are healthy, no absess, no cracks, etc. However, about 6 teeth hurt at any given time. I told Red that advil takes my pain away sometimes and he stated normally advil does not take neuropathic pain away, but he stated for a small number of folks, any antiinflamatory medication helps take neuropathic pain away, so I think it is worth a shot, if you haven't done so already, to try taking an Advil. And Red if you are reading, I hope I am quoting you accurately , and if not, please interject or clarify if I misunderstood :) Lastly, I cant remember who stated this, but somebody said she takes an anti-inflammatory called Mobic/Meloxocom twice per day for her pain plus something else... Hope this helps somebody other than me out there. Bless us all :)

If advil helped my teeth - I would suck on them like butterscotch!

Glad you are getting some plans together and had your teeth looked at !

Just a quick question....if all your teeth looked healthy, why are you having one pulled? I had 8 or 9 root canals and 4 extractions before being diagnosed. I can tell you that my teeth/gums hurt SO much worse after the extractions. I strongly caution you to be sure of a problem with the tooth before you pull it.

For me, tegretol worked the best. It wasn't until I got to 600 or 800 mg that it helped the teeth pain.

I hope you find relief somewhere!

Amitriptyline 100mg/day saved my life.

Anyone who suffers 24/7 aching teeth pain, or even other 24/7 facial pain, should try it (unless they're allergic, of course.)

I have to agree here. When I was first diagnosed, I was in so much pain I could not open my mouth at all. I wrote questions down. I asked the Dr could she arrange an emergency extraction of all my upper teeth. She said to never even consider this, it would make the pain much worse and I would have lost the teeth for nothing. I would consider other options.
