Root Canal?

I started having pain in September of last year. I tried carbamazepine and then amitryptiline. The amitryptiline (25mg) worked up until about 2 weeks ago. I had a dentist appt and the cold water and air triggered it like crazy. I went home and after about a week the pain was horrible. I called the dentist back to go over x-rays. He couldn't get a good read on them so he sent me to an endodontist to see if I'd need a root canal. My teeth tested normal and he didn't see anything in the x-rays. What I'm wondering is if anyone had pain in a certain tooth, that hurt even when you bit down. The endodontist doesn't necessarily think I need a root canal because the pain has also been in my lower jaw and temple and the amitryptiline had been helping for a few months. Also, I've tried ibuprofen 800, norco, and percocet and nothing was easing the pain, leading him to believe it's a nerve issue. I upped my doseage to 50 mg- hoping it works and brings relief. Thanks!

Hi,

Yes, my teeth hurt every single day. Especially the one tooth that started all of this two years ago. Leave your teeth alone. I will tell you that it is your nerve. If there is nothing physically wrong then don't do a thing. I go through this all the time...I am convinced that it must be a cavity. But nope. My teeth are apparently very healthy.

Touching that tooth can trigger it, so can cold or biting on it or sometimes nothing at all. I was on Amitriptyline for over a year. It worked well for me too but I had to keep increasing it. I was pain free at 25mgs to begin with and the last dose that worked was 60mgs. Your increase will probably help so that's good.

I have also had tooth pain and returned to endodonist several times after my root canal. I needed the root canal for years but put it off. Finally had it done after tn started. Each time he checks the tooth and declares it fine and tells me that it is the tn. TN should not negate our oral hygiene although it certainly complicates it. We still need to take care of our teeth as we don’t want to add infection and gum disease to our list of ailments.

I hope you get relief soon.

I had teeth pain too, but it is better right now b/c I'm taking Tegretol. Every so often I have some slight breakthrough pain, but for the most part I am pain free. Before I took the Tegretol it was excruciating. I had one unnecessary root canal. I just paid it off today actually. It was expensive.

Well, I can tell you that I recently had work done on a cracked tooth.I had a crown put on it. ... And in the aftermath, I had to increase my Amithriptyline to 50mg, because my ears were hurting some from the cold weather and the tooth was still trying to recover from being worked on. When biting down it still bothered me some.

It did help me by increasing my dosage. Sooo, maybe it will help you too! :)

I sure hope so.. Hang in there.

My teeth hurt too,but putting pressure on them,i dont get that pain, but they can feel achy like i have infection. I had x ray last wweek and had small infection, she put me on anti biotics, and am getting it checked tomorrow. But my bottom tooth hurts on pressing it,so am bloody nervous telling dentist. It is on the same side at bottom wher ei had the extraction that caused this issue. Im praying i dont have infection.I am still in the learning curve as to what is ATN pain and what it genuine toothache/infection pain.
