After reading so many posts from people whose doctors are fighting their need for more meds, different treatments, or surgery, I feel so blessed to have found my neurologist and neurosurgeon at West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown, WV. Both have been so understanding of the pain and willing to work with me, no matter what I asked. When I considered surgery two years ago, they brought in a panel of surgeons, each a specialist in MVD or Gamma Knife, to discuss the pros and cons of each procedure.
My neurologist, Dr. John Brick, was extremely understanding and was always willing to adjust my meds as needed. He empowered me to be in charge of my own pain control and even offered to admit me for IV meds if the pain was too intense.
Eventually I needed surgery because the pain become unbearable and uncontrollable with meds. Dr. Brick expedited my appointment with the Neurosurgery dept and I was seen within the week. I met with Dr. Rosen, who I had consulted with 2 years ago while considering MVD, and he admitted me same day due to the extreme nature of my condition. He was so understanding of the excruciating pain and my failing physical condition (unable to eat or drink for days). I had my MVD within two days after being admitted.
I seriously considered going to Pittsburgh for treatment since I am only an hour away and it's the birthplace of the modern treatment of TN. However, I am so glad I decided to go to WVUH because my experience was so positive. I would highly recommend both Dr. Brick and Dr. Rosen. So far I have had a good outcome from MVD, but I know that if I have complications, I can go back and get help when I need it.
