Persistant double vision

Hi y’all,
I had my two week after mvd surgery check-up, got my staples out of my noggin, and all is doing well. Only problem is that I still have the double-vision that I woke up with after surgery. The surgeon was surprised it hadn’t resolved. It is caused by a weakened muscle that controls the movement of the eye. Looking down is the worst, not only double, but vision in the right eye sees at about a 35 degree angle. Bad news is, he tells me it could take up to a year to become normal again. Has anyone else experienced this after MVD, and what did you do? I need to be able to drive, but it is out of the question right now. I made myself an eye patch which helps keep me from crashing into things, but my depth-perception is not good enough to drive. I have a feeling this may be a result of waiting too long to have surgery (6-7 years), and because some of the compression was caused by arachnoid scar tissue that was compressing the TN nerve and also the oculomotor nerve in that same tight space. Even if it never goes away, it is still better than the pain. The surgeon promises it will go away. It just might take a long time.

Hi Suzanne …I am very happy that you are not in pain…It is wonderful of you do keep all of us posted as you are doing…you are an angel…I am very happy to know that you are free of TN pain…you have been a fighter for six years and you can deal with this double vision stuff with one arm tied behind your back…perhaps a special designed type of eyeglasses can be fitted to help you see single…Im going in for the drill on July 23 and I would be lying to you if I said I wasnt worried. I would like to be around in a pain free condition to be with my grand children and see them grow up a little…Also…personally…if I have to see triple to be pain free bring it on…no problem…I want you to know that I am following every single word that you type because you have been down the path I am going…I appreciate you more than you know and think you are one tough chick.

Vic, I think the worst part was the week before the surgery! I kept thinking about what could go wrong, how long it would take to recover, and what if it doesn’t work? I’m glad to say, the reality was much better than I expected. It has been 3 weeks since the drilling, and I’m feeling better than I have in a long, long time. My head is still a little sore in places, but it is nothing like that horrible TN pain. I was outside in some fierce wind yesterday and didn’t even have a “twinge” of the pain I used to get with the slightest breeze. I appreciate all of you so much, you’re the only people who understand what this is like. My 18 yr. old son decided I must be fully recovered by now, so he left to stay at a friends house since it is so boring around here! That leaves me here alone until 2:00 AM when my husband gets home from work, but I’m fine. I only worry about wildfires since we live in a very remote area on the side of a mountain and I can’t drive yet. I guess in that case, I would just have to call our local fire department so I could be rescued by some hunky young firefighters! LOL!
The double-vision is getting better, and I think that is a pretty rare complication. I can wait, and I know it will be resolved in time. I wish I had done this sooner, I feel I’ve wasted many years being in pain when I didn’t have to be. I’m hoping your surgery is successful and you can enjoy those grandkids for many more years! 60 is not old! I have family members who are in their 90’s and still live on their own. That’s what I’m shooting for! I don’t know if I’m all that tough, but I’m certainly stubborn. My husband can attest to that (poor guy!)

Hi Suzanne! I hope all continues on a good path for you. I had no visual problems after my MVD. I did/do have severe problems after my 2nd radiosurgery. It left a brachial lesion near the brain stem, resulting in blurred and double vision with nasty peripheral shadows. After more ‘specialist friends’ diagnostics, consults, etc; I now sport eyeglasses with prisms. Now there are no vision issues.
I trust you won’t need the same and your vision clears on it’s own.
Take good care, bob

Wow! I’m sorry to hear you were left with vision problems, I hope your pain is resolved. Thanks for letting me know there is a solution in case this vision problem doesn’t clear up. At least I can wear glasses now. One of my worst trigger points was anything touching under my right eye or the inside of my nose. It made wearing any kind of glasses impossible. After the MVD, that pain is completely gone, YAY!

Hi Suzanne!

Suzanne,
I am glad you are still free of TN pain. I hope your vision is getting better but it sounds like you still have it. Maybe it won’t be too much longer and you will see an improvement.
