Painkillers: What is most effective?

Hi! I am new to this forum and am trying to glean as much information as possible on pain killers. I am taking trileptal and Lamictal (not at a therapeutic dose yet) and am still having to take pain killers to knock back my face pain. I have Atypical TN and seem to be in some sort of pain (burning and aching) all of the time.

I currently take 20 mg. Oxycontin 3x daily. If anyone has any experience with pain killers and have found one that works better than others, please let me know. I do realize, that at some point in time they stop working and a higher dose is needed (I have been at this point for some time now); a slippery slope that leads to a lot of difficulty getting off of them when the time comes (I am hoping my time comes really soon!).

Thanks for your help! Best. Johanna

Hi. My doctor said what he has prescribed me would work better than Oxycontin so he never even tried that one. I am taking Dilaudid. which is a Narcotic so you DO have to have a presc every month unless you can get a pain clinic to keep you on a regular prescription/refill. (Hydromorphone-generic). I started out at 2mg and it barely even made a flutter on my pain so he moved me up to 4mg. It does work great for me. Now, when I have the super severe attacks, there’s basically not a thing on earth that helps until I get to the ER and they dose me up with the liquid Dilaudid, usually.

I also take Tegretol and Neurontin as well. Along with those, I take Klonapin, which is supposed to help ease pain as well. I hope this helps. It can sometimes take sooooo long to figure out what combination works. Good luck and God Bless.

Tonya-

Thank you! I too, have tried dilaudid but I didn’t like it and i have a personal history with it (my dad took it when in the hospital with cancer and it scared the crap out of me). I switched back to taking percocet and so far, so good. My pain is not at the level that perhaps, yours is. It did need to get to the clinic quick last week and get a shot of demarol- it worked well for a couple of hours but TN pain sure is persistent. Hence, I needed another pain killer a couple of hours later. I think the problem is that it takes such a short amount of time to max out on narcotics requiring a higher dose, higher dose then higher dose. I know they are not necessarily practical for use with TN, from what I have read but they seem to help me so I do it. Thanks again for you reply and I will keep dilaudid in my arsenal in case I get to a point that I need something stronger. Best to you! Johanna

Thanks for the note Nancy! I HATE PILLS, TOO! I want to go off of them all and have a normal, painless life! My docs are not pleased with me as I generally take my own sweet time going onto meds as I want to be at the lowest dose possible. I don’t like side effects; sleeping all day, not remembering things, feeling strange and not in control of my own mind. I switched to percocet last week and it seems to be working much better than Oxycontin. I started with percocet but eventually switched as percocet stopped working and at that time, my doctors didn’t want to up my dosage of narcotics (I have an addictive personality which I disclosed to them as I am a painfully honest person). Now, I am taking a less overall dose of narcotics and I am much happier with percocet and in my mind I think that when the time comes it will be easier to kick than Oxycontin.
Take care and I wish you a pill free and pain free time to come! Johanna

My pain isn’t to bad yet. I think I have Atypical TN also. I never thought to ask I was trying to wrap my head around having TN. I take Vicidon. I tried Oxycontin and if gave me migraines. I am tired of pills
