What has worked for you?

Hello,

I see faces of some wonderful ladies in this list, so far. I am sure that you have some input which could help. I also hope to make some friends that I have not met yet!

I'm usually wordy, but my question is simple: What pain killers have you found success with?

We hear about the successes and failures of so many surgeries, injections, anti-convulsants, muscle relaxers and alternative therapies. I've tried so many of these, but am not going to make this post three pages. . . laughs!

Ok, I've stated in other discussions that, so far, from what I have tried, Methadone has come as close to a cure as anything ever has for me since 2003.

Please share with us what type of Opoid Therapy has worked for you.

Thanks all,

Stef

P.S. I need your prayers for a good outcome to my Pain Clinic appointment on Monday.

Hi Gloria,

I believe you would get appropriate pain meds from a pain clinic. I was referred to them in BC and they have found a local doctor to assist with perscription refills but are their to help be anytime I need a change or have a concern I go to them. The local doctor is only for my 6 mg 3x a day methadone refills. They have helped me so much because Gabapentin and Lyrica were not making enough of a difference and changed me to the point I could no longer stand it. I am very interested in what Stef finds out at her appointment on Monday.

Let me know if you are able to get a referral and keep in touch, this group was needed and will benifit all members. (Thanks Stef)

hugs,

Tracy

G-Force,

In short, even though I have what I believe is a bad pain clinic, YES!

Your doctor sounds like an insensitive man who does not understand the torturous nature of ATN, but then again, that is most of the Healthcare Industry, if seems.

Wishes for more compassionate care,

Stef

Hello Friends,

I'm currently on Vicodin. I have an on-going struggle with my doctor over my pain medications. I was even so frustrated at one point about the upcoming battle over my refill prescription that as soon as my doctor (who looks like Richard Gere, but makes me want to put his head through a wall!!!) walked into the exam room, I said, "I'm in so much pain, I'm begging you to admit me to the hospital and knock me out for about 3 days!" My strategy resulted in him immediately whipping out his prescription pad, writing a scrip out for Vicodin, so fast it made my head spin.

Other pain meds that have worked well for me are:

- Demerol

- Tylox

- Valium

My doctor will not promote me from hydros to oxys and whenever I ask him if there's anything else I can take that's stronger than Vicodin (so I can take less) his smartass reply is, "Yeah, heroin." I'm so exasperated trying to make him understand what kind of pain I'm in. I know he's paranoid but I wonder why a doctor can be paranoid about giving a patient strong pain meds when the patient has a diagnosis documented by two neurologists and a neurosurgeon?

Would I have a better chance of getting appropriate pain meds from a pain management clinic?

Thanks,

G-Force

You're welcome, Tracy.

As usual, your input is informative and on point.

I will keep you all informed as to the results of my PM appt. I wish that they were as compassionate and knowledgeable about what helps this condition, as your seem to be.

Hugs,

Stef

Will pray for your appointment. I have been well controlled for 10+ years (except this month) on long acting morphine capsules, with a fast acting lower dose tablet for breakthrough pain. I tried the long acting tablets, think its called MS contin. They are famous for not dissolving/digesting well, so you don't get the relief you should. I changed to capsules and they work much better.

I'm also loving my prescription pain cream, diclofenac 10%.

Gloria, a huge reason why docs are paranoid about pain meds is that THEY are tightly controlled and investigated and reported for every patient that they prescribe strong pain meds to. I wish docs would understand that morphine has fewer side affects and less liver toxicity than oxy or hydro, and you can take less, with better pain control. Stef has mentioned methadone. Same story there, but the doctors are scared. One I knew DID go to jail for giving a man with infected bone marrow in jaw a lot of tylenol 3 over a year's time. He really needed them, but the gov't was not very understanding. The sherrif showed up at my door and my doctor's door in the small town that my pain specialist moved to in the USA, and I was the first person to EVER be prescribed morphine without having cancer. The Sherriff was checking to see if I was selling them or something. It was a bit intimidating, and when doctors get visits like that, they fear for their reputation.

PAIN CONTROL REALLY NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT IN MEDICAL SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY!

Hi Sheils,

Does this diclofinac cream lessen your burning? What does it help with the most? Can you rub in directly on your gums or just your face? I used to use that in pill form for my spinal bifia olculta siatica but god has releaved me of that pain during my current journey . . . (another miracle) I'm looking for help to get through the longer days when I get up early to fullfill optimal mom duties and them the high point of my pain start about 3pm and increases to be to much by 8ish on bad days. These days are few but bring me down a notch and it takes a few days to recover back to my normal. I am allergic to morphine and found this out like Gloria after a bad IV reaction.

Thanks!

Tracy
