Numbness after MVD

I feel as if the upper part of my scalp (over my ear) is becoming more numb as time goes on. I had my MVD on Dec. 5 (about 3 weeks ago). I'm not sure if it's my imagination or not. I also don't have much hearing in my right ear. I've been told it's fluid that needs to be reabsorbed by my body. I don't see the surgeon until Jan. 6. I'm not having any pain and the surgery went very smoothly, although I'm still having trigeminal pain and have not been able to cut down on my meds. Any comments/ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

It can take a full year for all the pieces and parts, that have been rattled…to get better. For example, it took in and out of little remissions , for two years
to get to 1% pain…and rarely…no meds, no more lidocaine face patches.

Maybe patches for now for you? Listen to your body, but also give yourself time. Make a journal for the doctor .

This is a very short time (three weeks) out of surgery! I had my MVD on October21st and it was not until 6 weeks had passed that I knew I was moving forward. REST! I did switch to Advil and only took a pain pill at night. That did help my energy level, the pain pills make you sleepy. I found if I did too much, my side of my head would be really sore. If you have returned to work, then make sure lunch is quiet time for you, excessive talking aggravates the pain level. My bite returned at 8 weeks. I am almost 10 weeks past surgery, I can stay awake all day, I still have some numbing, and the side of my head is more sensitive than sore. I am walking 40 minutes a day (goal is an hour). Hope this helps. Happy New Year!

Thanks, Kc Dancer Kc and Wheels! I keep telling myself to be patient and reminding myself that it's only been 3 weeks. I feel as if I'm resting, but I'm also worried about returning to work in a week. I teach students who are mentally disabled, and it requires a huge amount of energy. Yesterday, I went for a walk and made it for all of 15 minutes. I also worry that something is wrong because of the increased numbness and the same intensity of trigeminal pain. Basically, I'm a worrier! I appreciate you sharing your experiences, and I'll try to be more patient!

Hi teacher,
Best advice I can give you is this…
Truly listen to your body and let it guide you…it knows best.
Your question about numbness? Call your surgeons office, inform them of your concerns a d wait for a reply…don’t wait until your appointment if its worrying you.
After my MVD in April, it took 5-6 months for me to be able to feel “somewhat normal” energy wise. I had a sloooowwww recovery in that sense…at 5 months post op was the first time I could walk for 20 minutes.
We all heal at different rates, there is no set time period, age, health, lifestyle factors all contribute. As KC mentioned it can be a full year to feel completely yourself after this surgery.
The fluid in the ear thing/inability to hear lasted approximately 3-5 weeks for me…this frustrated me so much, such an odd feeling.
All the best of wishes as you continue to recover and heal,
((((( hugs )))), Mimi
