Might seem a stupid question. Can I ask, how quickly is MRI done following first neuro appointment. I am in UK.

Hi Ann,
No stupid questions ever…I’m not in the UK, but Canada, if you present with TN like features, then it is recommended that an MRI be done to rule out other possibilities that could be causing your symptoms like MS and tumours. It isn’t really a diagnostic tool as compressions on the nerve can be difficult to see on an MRI, and not everyone that has TN has compressions on the nerve.
So to rule out other causes you should have an MRI in my opinion.
Diagnosis of TN is usually made by your description of pain, and your response to the anti-convulsant medications.

Thanks Mimi
Have you gone to the groups tab above - then join the UK group?
Here in USA mine was done same week as 1st neuro appt to rule out MS and tumor
BUT - know that most of the time - compressions for TN are not found on MRI
i just talked to my doc the other day. he told me they will look for atrophy of the nerve in the mri as that will be a sign of compression. he was still a little cryptic about the whole thing, but i have not had the mri yet so i guess that is why. i will have it on the 7th of june, it had to be ok'd by the insurance before i could get that appointment is why the wait here, im in the usa.
