Maybe it’s this denial stage, but has anyone known anyone dx’ed w TN when it was just a tooth? I have had about 3 dental x-rays that have come up clean, but something is really strange about my back molar. I see my neuro tomorrow as follow-up from MRI and I have so many questions for him. I think I have a cracked filling. My dentist agreed to see me before my neuro appt tomorrow and I also made an appt with another dentist for a second opinion. The (second-opinion) hygienist said I can bring in my x-rays for the dentist to look at but said if my tooth was causing that much pain, there would be swelling or something. I know it sounds like I’m trying to wish away my tn…but could it be a mis dx?
Also, what’s with the metallic taste? And these headaches…is it from the tegretol?
the thing is if you have a tooth that is really messed up the pain doesn't come and go... I thought mine was my upper back left molar, too...I would floss it like crazy using clove oil and it seemed to help..for a few months--.eventually even that didn't help... who knows though?? Anything is possible!! At least the tegretol is working for now!!
metallic taste is a side effect of a number of medications. having said that, tooth pain related to dental problems does not always have swelling associated with it. In my case of TN, my pain management doc was the only one who gave a plausible explanation. she believes an undiagnosed infection was transmitted to my alveloar nerves (part of the trigeminal nerve) via a cracked tooth. my symptoms began within a few weeks after a dental cleaning. she believes the infection was started due to aggravation of microbes gaining access to my nerves via the cracked molar. So even though your problem may have started out as dental, you may now have issues with the nerve. However, we're all different - causes, symptoms, etc, which is what makes diagnosis so HARD! good luck.
I hope you don't have TN too. But I had to chime in here because the sore tooth and the metallic taste are similar to my case.
My whole journey started with incredibly terrible pain in my lower left molars. I will try to keep this short--after four months, two dentists, many antibiotics and pain pills, two fillings, a medicated filling and a root canal--that same tooth still hurts!
My pain is controlled now thank goodness :) But even after all I have been through that led me to my TN diagnosis I am still sometimes convinced that there has to be something wrong with that tooth!
And the metallic taste--I had that. It always came on with the pain and swear it felt like it was coming from that tooth. I actually started a discussion on it. I attached the link below for you
Taco,
Yes, my tooth sounds like yours, upper back molar that has been annoying me for a while. My husband has been teasing me about my flossing addiction! I’m still holding out hope that it’s a tooth and not tn. My appt is tomorrow afternoon, right before a big snowstorm is due to hit. Fun day.
KC,
Yes, I have googled and printed everything I can find. Thank you so much for your help. I’m learning more than I ever wanted to know about the trimenal nerve.

Thank you, MRI. So it could be the tooth and infection that is the cause of the tn…it sure feels like the tooth. And the tegretol stopped the pain in your tooth? Alveolar …another thing to look up.
