Newly diagnosed

Hello all… My name is Carolyn and I was diagnosed this past Friday. My neurologist prescribed me tegretol which I have yet to take because my pharmacy doesn’t carry it. I am still very skeptical that it is not my teeth, although most of the pain comes through a tooth I had root canaled many years ago. My dentist was my first stop and he xrayed and saw nothing. I cannot eat a thing on the right side of my mouth. Not even a banana, which I learned the hard way.

My question is that I have the same pain everyone else seems to have except I also have a tremendous amount of pain in my temple as well… As in it feel like someone is stabbing me with an ice pick. Does anyone else have that as well (I’ve read through the threads and ditto on the blood/metallic taste in my mouth) I also have an after sensation where my right side almost becomes paralyzed and is no longer in symmetry with my left side.

I'm sorry that you have been diagnosed with TN but I think this site will help you learn a lot about it. My problems did not start with the teeth but often feel the pain you are describing and yes, my pain often moves from the temple all the way to my neck on the left side. I was diagnosed after going to the ER believing I was having a stroke. The entire left side of my face was drooping, I could not talk, think clearly, stand, and was in extreme pain. The symptoms can sometimes cause such a sensation I was told. I am on so many medications right now I can not name them all. The positive thing is the meds have helped the stabbing pains and I seldom get the paralyzed feeling or confusion. The bad news for me is I also have type 2 TN so I continue to have the periods of extreme pressure in my ear, face, and throat which nothing has helped. I recommend getting the tegretol as soon as possible to see if it helps. Just don't get discouraged because there are so many other meds they can try if it doesn't. Try to stay positive and you will be in my prayers.

I swear even after months I learn so many new things on this site! The metalic taste has been a constant with me over the years and I never knew till now it was related!! But yes, my pain started in a tooth which had been extracted years ago, just so puzzling at the time! Even so, everyone still suspects their teeth.
