Medication Cost

HAPPY 2013 EVERYONE!! Along with the new year begins new deductibles. I take Lyrica and for this months dose and next months it will be $978!!! I have a low deductible but still this is crazy. I really don't want this to become a political issue just what do you all do with the costs? I am looking at not being able to afford my meds and that will not be good at all. Thanks in advance~~

I am on Tegretol and two months for me is only $480...haha, only!!! I also have a low deductible which is nice, but with my insurance I have to pay in full at the register and wait about a month to be reimbursed...which absolutely sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW! I don't have a deductible on my meds thank God! I just have a co-pay amount to pay for each drug. Now, I DO have a $500 deductible on my medical insurance and since I am going to the neuro office on the 16th, I am sure I will meet that in one visit, LOL. I have a habit of hoarding money, so I usually have enough to cover that. This is due to a horrible relationship I was in years ago and the thug was taking my money all the time and abusing me, so after I got away from him, I guess I had an issue about money and I hoard it. I am glad that that is the only thing I hoard though, hahaha. Good luck to you hun. I hope you find a way to pay for it. (((((((hugs)))))))

Gosh, that would be an interesting issue of "Hoarders" lol!!! Thanks for the chuckle of the day~~

Sara, that really does not settle well either. At least you do know that it will be coming back to you. I tried tegretol and I had no life at all. Totally knocked me on my butt. I looked up and it says that Lyrica is suppose to be generic in 2015 but that they expect delays. Thanks for the encouragement~~

I’m having issues at the moment with my insurance wanting pre authorizations before paying for meds. I’ve been waiting 2 weeks and still don’t have it. The pharmacy has allowed it, so I’ve been buying my medicine at 7 day doses at a time. $111 for 7 days. Hopefully when I get the ok, the insurance will reinburse me. Reinbursement is all fine and dandy…it’s just getting the money to pay it in the first place. I know many of you pay way more. It’s just sad.

One last thought, if you have no prescription insurance, some pharmaceutical companies will help you pay for your medicine. You need to check their website and look for drug payments assistance.

Can you use the generic form of it (carbamazepine)??? That is what I use and that makes my copay only $10 with insurance.

I was told by my dr. that in 30years he has had only 1-2 patients approved long term. Any others were for a month then the companies said no more, so I have shied away from that. WE do have insurance, it's just meeting the $3500 deductable. (Good think I called, cause I was thinking it was $2500, that was last years...) I tried the Tegretol that you have the generic form of and it totally wipes me out and then I have absolutely no life. Thanks for the suggestion~~

I have fought with insurance companies over many things and they don't scare me. Sometimes I even win!! What I found with meds, if your dr. says that nothing else will work for you they have to approve it at their contracted rate. Do you use the nortriptyline in combination with what and what kind of results are you getting? I was taking it, and since I am trying ot get rid of meds I took it off my list which means maybe that's why I have been having issues more often....forgot about that! Thanks for the brain squeeze :D blessings~~

Several years ago the insurance I had flat out declined to pay for imitrex for migraines. Ever since then I've been wary even if you have insurance to stay on their good side.

Right now I pay $5-$10 for generics and $40 for non generics through my insurance. The cymbalta I got today has a full price of $233 for 1 month of 30mg, I paid $40, which still sucks. Paid another $40 co-pay to see the doctor so $80/mo for just the 2 of those.

The nortriptyline without insurance is like $30/mo, oxcarbazapine is cheap as well. Percocets were $5 for 60, full price would be $30, with a street value of $300.

You are most welcome! I am glad I am not the only one that watches that show, LOL!

I have found if I mailorder it through my insurance it will be about $760 so that is somewhat better, but heck why are we even paying for insurance!! I was on nortriptyline at one time and it worked, but I don't think I realized tat it did take the edge off more than I gave it credit. Thanks everyone. Let me know if anyone has any other ideas!! blessings~~

Shephergril, do you mind saying what insurance company you use for prescription meds? I've never heard of someone paying that much, unless they were uninsured.

You can get coupons for Lyrica through their site, and if your doctor pursues it, he can get tons of samples and then give some to you. He can't give you enough to cover all your needs, but the samples can have up to 1-2 weeks worth, which would really help you.

At first my insurance company didn't want to pay for my Lyrica (wanted me on Neurontin instead), but he was able to write them a letter and they held a board review and approved it, and it ended up costing only $35 a month. Which is less than a standard name brand copay (which is $40).

I don't know if you can try one of those options, but I hate to see you paying so much.

On a good note, I don't know if anyone takes Maxalt, but it went generic last week. It's really helpful for migraines, so this is really great thing for me. Now it's $5 a month instead of $40!
I'm glad to hear that some of you are finding relief with Nortriptyline. I take 100mg/day of Amitriptyline, which is almost the same thing, and it has been the most helpful med I've taken for the 24/7 facial pain.

I have blueshield CA. I also had to get a note from my dr. for them to cover Lyrica. I will ask my dr about the samples, but I am not sure he offers them. So glad you've gotten relief in another area of medication costs. We have never been on any type of aid but this has us wondering if perhaps we should ask at least see if some of it can be covered. Pride is in here a lot....blessings and happy Saturday! May you be pain free~~

I don't think they are the same. Lyrica is for nerve pain. Not sure what cymbalta is for. Blessings and may you have a pain free day~~

Nortriptyline has been the biggest help for my atypical pain. I just started cymbalta a week ago and it feels like it's helping as well. Is lyrica like cymbalta? I see both on the TV commercials.

The amitriptyline is almost the same drug bug I've heard it is more sedating, maybe a little more effective I dun
