Has any one had the gamma knife for glossopharyngeal ....no trigger points. What are the risks and side effects. Thank you. JB
Hello. My father in-law has trigeminal neuralgia and has done the gamma knife twice. It did not help him. He recently had the MVD surgery and is doing great. One major point about the gamma knife, his neurologist has diagnosed him with early onset of dementia and it is from the excessive amounts of radiation. This may be something you want to keep in mind. No relief and high risk of dementia. No thanks!
My father had Gamma Knife Surgery as a result of treating a Brain Tumor. It is my understanding that the treatment focuses on an object. In my fathers case, the focus was the tumor. He had some success. However, what is the object being focused on for treatment to GPN suferers? The nerve itself or something else? When I asked my surgeon he explained to me that GK focuses on brain matter. Killing brain cells and using those "dead" cells as a cushion or barrier for the nerve. I'm not sure this GK procedure is used for everyone but it was an option to treat my GPN trouble. I opted to find other treatment.
Thank you for your input. This gamma knife is for glossopharyngeal...the 9th cranial nerve.
Thank you for letting me know. I am hoping to find someone who has had GK for glossopharyngeal. I am sorry it didn't work in your case. I already feel like I am loosing it. I can't remember things now and it really bothers me. Things I know and just can't remember.

You are braver then I am. They scared me to death with the risks involved for the surgery....feeding tube, blindness, stroke...my stomach turned and I ran. Just this morning I was in a store and headed for a seat because I could feel an "episode" starting. I need to do something! I have many other health problems and feel like time is running out.

Thank you to all who answered but I still feel out in left field not having anyone respond who had the GK for my problem. I know not many have had it but this was this was my last hope in finding someone who did. Time is getting closer for us to go to the Mayo so I will just have to have to keep praying on this. I hope to get off a lot of meds and feel better after the GK is done.
