Gamma knife for glossopharyngeal neuralgia

Dear friends

Trust this finds you well.

I’m considering gamma knife surgery for glossopharyngeal neuralgia- a condition similar to TN but affects the 9th cranial nerve.

Has anyone had experience with Gamma knife? What were the results? What should I look out for and talk to my neurosurgeon about?

And would you recommend it? I’m in my 40s

Regards

Max

I have trigeminal neuralgia. I have had Gamma Knife 2 times. It was successful for a couple of years. No side effects and I felt nothing during the procedure. I wish I could have it again but my neurosurgeon said I can only have it done twice.
Good luck to you, I hope it helps.

My girlfriend had that and had surgery. She is now pain free. It might be worth it for you

I had GN as well with impingement in the 9th and 10th cranial nerves. I was diagnosed in 2018 and had MVD surgery in May 2018 with successful results. I was never offered Gamma Knofe as an option but I think I would have tried that first if that wouldn’t have precluded the MVD option. I do have hearing loss and mild swallowing issues from the surgery but have been pain free since that time. I’ll take the issues I have now to be pain free.

I know that doesn’t answer your question directly but maybe just another perspective. I wish you success in whatever treatment you try!!!

My Nuerologist is recommending I just go to a radiation oncologist that does cyberknife and gammaknife. He said I don’t need a neurosurgeon. Have you ever heard this? Did you have any bad side effects?

I have trigeminal neuralgia. I was seeing a neurosurgeon and an oncologist when I had the gamma knife. I did not have any side effects whatsoever.

I had cyberknife but i think it is quite similar to gamma knife. The afteraffects provided more pain and numbness than I had to begin with. I’ve not heard anything good or bad about gamma knife. The description is that they gave me more radiation than what was wrong with me and now I suffer badly.

good for you

I had Gamma knife. It worked for three years. Then meds after that worked.
It did give me a side effect of numbness on tongue. Then eventually taste loss three months later. Think I’d do it again, tho, knowing the outcomes…
Good luck to you!
