I had an MVD which lasted 3 years, I am now on Tegretol, Lyrica , Tramadol and am trying Lidocaine patches which have to be kept on for 12 hours every 24.Has anyone else tried these? I am on my 4th week.
There is one member KC Dancer who swears by them. I wanted to try them, but they were cost prohibitive for me as an uninsured and unemployed.
Yes, I use them, but sparingly because I'm allergic to lidocaine! I like the capiscain patches sometimes better than the lidocaine patches because they promote heat and heat feels nice. These are patches I found on the shelf at Winco for a very low price. I like the Ketamine cream the best. Although, it's not a patch, it is a compounded cream that is nice to mix with a small amount of lidocaine gel. They seem to help each other out as both have different jobs :-) The itching did not start until well into 3 months of using these, 12 hours on, 12 hours off.
Oh yes, I have found the capiscain patches to be great.
I use the lidocaine patches and find them helpful. I don't necessarily keep them on that long. I also cut them up into smaller pieces depending on where I need to put them. So a group of 10 can last a very long time. I think I might give the capiscain patches a try sometime for the heating effect though.
Why do you "have" to keep them on for 12 hours? Because of your pain? I generally use them if my pain is too bad to go to sleep. OR if I am having these very specific attacks right under my ear or at my nose or near my eye. So I cut off smaller pieces like a small bandaide and attach it there. It seems to help. My Neuro actually suggested it. I clean the scissors with alchohol first and then put the patch back in the pouch and then store the pouch in a plastic baggie.
I used them for awhile. They helped but I have very sensitive skin and broke out from the adhesive. I liked the way I could cut them to fit the exact area on my cheek. They did a good job of blocking the a/c. I've also tried Lidocaine ointment. It's very soothing but does not block as well.

They have to be tried for 4 weeks after a consultantation with a neurologist, and if they help the Doctor will prescribe them.

I have been able to cut down one tegretol, down from 800mg to 700mg.
