My recently long episode of pain went away completely when I did laugh line stretch. You can find those exercise on Youtube easily. It was in controlled when I did the stretch.
When I feel a little sting on my face, I will start to move my head around. It helps to stop the pain from very beginning.
I move from side to side or to the middle because when I over stretch one side of my neck, ex, sleeping on side with high pillow, I feel sting on my face.
I also do bedside neck traction daily now, but I cannot tell if it helps.
