Iv Had my MVD on the 16th August 2011

Hi to everyone,

Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers when i was waiting and going in for my MVD.

I had the op on Tuesday 16th went down to theatre at 1.50pm and came out at 7.35 pm my hubby was walking the corridors so i know exactly how long i was in theatre for.:)

I cant remember much of Tuesday evening, nor Wednesday morning, but by Wednesday evening, i was sitting up in my bed, I had the most awfull headache, someone told me it feels like you have been run over, they were right, IT DID... LOL.

Thursday morning, i was up and sitting in a chair, i diddnt have any TN pain, it was just this blasted headache, i presume it was from where the liqued between the brain and dura had gone, as thats what it felt like,( as if my brain was banging about inside my skull) whenever i moved. Honestly though when they gave me the right pain medicine it helped enormously, By Friday morning, i was up and walking about and felt as right as rain, i was still haveing the headaches but still no TN. How GOOD is that.

My consultant Mr Singh, told me i could go home on the Monday which was 22nd August,, but they let me home on the Saturday instead, I was only in 5 days including the day of my surgery. I cannot believe how well i feel.

Since being out of hospital i have 2 episodes of TN, in my right cheek, My consultant said this could happen while i wait for everything to settle back down again after the surgery, But neither episode was any where near the pain i was having before i had my surgery.I had my stitches out last Tuesday, and then i could finally wash my hair.

I still get very tired quite easily, I have found my balance seems to go sometimes, but its something i can cope with, as it seems to happen more when i am tired.

I go back to see my consultant on 11th Oct.

any problems before then i go to my GP unless its real bad then i ring My consultant direct.

I hope that this helps any one else thinking of this procedure, Its not as bad as we think its gonna be, BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR TIME RECOVERING,

Thank you again for everyones prayers and thoughts,

I will post some pics of my scar, which is bigger than i thought it was going to be, but hey its gonna be covered by hair, and even if it wasnt covered, it doesnot bother me.

Thanks again, Nita xxx

Thanks so much for the info.... I'm scouring on here to see initial outcomes, later outcomes and I hope you remain on the upside!

MVD day for me is Oct.

Okay --My new word is TERRIFICATION --- how do you get over being terrified? I'm currently in no pain after a strange reiki session --- so it's harder to stay in the acceptance stage -- I know cognitively it has to be done..... But fear is a great instinct --- fight or flight!

Hope you feel a little better each day. Best wishes for a speedy and pain free recovery. xxxx

Nita,

I am so glad to hear of your postive outcome! May you soon be totally pain free! It would be lovely if you could continue posting your recovery. I am contemplating MVD but need to know more before I decide it is right for me.

Your information is most valuable. Thank you for sharing.

We feverently wish you only the best of luck for the future.

Hi , Anita

I am so.... glad to hear you are doing so well!! It has been "one" year today that I had my MVD surgery. The surgery wasn't really that bad for me either. I would definitely recommend it. I have been pain free ever since. I am not completely off my medication, though, I still have to take a very small amount of carbamazepine for the "twinges" i still get above my lip, but, that"s OK with me , because I have not had any of the horrible shocking pain's that I was having from TN.

If I could tell you anything to do now, it would be to take care of yourself, get plenty of rest, no lifting, and continue this for as long as you can and allow your nerve to heal and your incision area to heal. I started doing things really earlier than I should have, I felt great, so about 6 months later I started mowing the lawn (on a riding lawn mower) and things like that, I wish I would have waited, I might not be getting the twinges that I get now. Just thought I might add this.

Take Care,

Linda

Thank you for sharing your story, Nita!! I do not know the severity of your headache but I had two spinal tap leaks and that headache was brutal. You are healing and you will be healed.

Hi there, great to see that you're up & about & typing away. So pleased that you're doing well, take it a day at a time and rest up.

Take care,

Nita,

Thank you so much for the info. I have TN I with v3. I am so tired of being in pain. I went to the hospital for the pain and they gave me a shot of morphine 10 mgs. that made me see things. I want the MVD surgery. I go see the surgeon on Sept.23 rd and am so ready. I checked my Doctor out on a site called, healthgrades.com and he had no scations against him, as did other Doctors they wanted me to see. Yes, I am scared, but this his got to be better the this pain 24/7. Will keep you updated. I have read that people that have TN I, the surgery has a better success rate. I hope so.

Renee

Anita, I am new here so you don't know me but I wanted to wish you the best of the luck on your recovery. Take time to heal. I hope your pain is gone for good!

Take care.

Anita; THANKYOU for sharing your news. Everyone needs to hear from people who have successes. I have only heard of TWO MVDs that worked well and permanently, so this lifts my spirits. I know you will continue to heal and improve.

I found out about the newest method of MVD. it is done with a scope and the hole is the size of a dime or thumbnail, and the incision is only 2 inches big! Its being done at Stanford University Hospital in California, so whenever I hear of someone considering it, I tell them about it, because it has almost NO after effects or long term symptoms like the regular method does. I wouldn't be surprised if the new method becomes mainstream soon, so they will say that the old method was almost barbaric in comparison. I see so many people here so hopeful, then they come out with a bad outcome. It's heartbreaking. Then the Dr. offers to do it again to get it right. Some accept, hoping it will work (but if the Dr. didn't know how to do it right the first time, what will change?) Some decline and try other methods.

I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU! Keep us updated, we'd love to hear your results whether good or bad and perhaps you could recommend the surgeon on your home page.

Best wishes to you,
Sheila
