Does anyone experience facial swelling on the side where they have TN?
Hi Robyn,

Thanks,Mina. I had been convinced by the ER that I had an infection and then went to have dental crud done as a result. We all know what dental work does… It freaking hurts. then today, my face started swelling again. I was crying to my mom because I didn’t know what to do. Your reply makes me feel less stressed.
Thank you!
Robyn

Sabrina,
I’m so sorry. I hope you receive positive news when you see the neurosurgeon. I’m soooo lethargic that after teaching all day, I can’t even think about anything except lying down. All weekend seems to be my ‘makeup my sleep’ time. My whole family sees me as lazy. My dad told me I’d feel so much better if I went to the gym after work.
I sure wish I’d have asked about the facial swelling before I did the ER and endodontist, oral surgeon, and GP thing this past week. One day I’ll learn!
Everyone on here is wonderful. Thank you!
Robyn

Hi Robyn, I have facial swelling on the left side of my face and neck where I have the tn.The left side of my face and neck look completely different than the right side.It has been like this since the end of 2007.It’s not that swollen in the morning when I wake up but the more I move, the more my face swells and movement also causes severe pain.I have lifted weights and walked on a treadmill for over 20 years and had to give exercise up due to severe pain.I loved working out but have been sitting on the couch most of the day now.I can’t stand the way my face looks now and have gained weight due to not being able to exercise.I do not like living this way but will be seeing a neurosurgeon Monday to see what my options are. Sabrina
Yes, sometimes I do… it is interesting to me that I had drastic swelling on that side years before I ever developed TN, but now I just notice it when I’m in a lot of pain. What is your swelling like?
My swelling has sent me to urgent care and the ER and the dentist, endodontist, etc… Everyone thinking it had to be an infection (without a fever)… Now I ignore it for the most part. Mine seems to begin just under my right eye and follow along my lower cheek line. Lovely! Let me tell you , I’m pretty vain and it irritates me. I’m glad I had my eyeliner tattooed and my lipstick tattooed before I developed TN!

I was going to ask if anyone had swelling with this and then found this thread. I get swelling on the right side of my face where the pain is; I also have lesser swelling on my left side (less pain that side also). I look like I haven’t had any sleep due to the bags under my eyes.
I also have the swelling and it even feels like my eye is closing. Sometimes you can actually see the drooping but most of the time it feels like I have to fight to keep my eye open. Waiting to see neurosurgeon that did my Gamma in a couple of hours. I hope to have some answers that I can share with you all.
Even though this topic is a year old, I was lad to find it. My mother mentioned that my TN side is quite swollen, so I wondered if this happens to others. Now I see it does.
Sheila – I agree that I was actually happy to see this topic. I had a bad episode of TN around Easter on the left side of my face. After about 48 hours of pain, my face around the left jaw swelled up about the size of an apple. It hurt and was sore to the touch for about another week before it finally went down.
Yes I do have swelling on the one side, everyone can notice it.
I tried ice to make it go down, but it doesn't help.
I had this same question when I first joined the site. Many people do get swelling on the that hurts. But be careful as this can also be a serious side effect of Neurontin. or Gabapentin. I was told by the ER doctor that TN doesn’t cause facial swelling. I told her she better do a little more studing on the subject before she tells me what it does to us.
Stacey -- I had the same response from my Neurologist. When I told him about the swelling, he indicated that there was no way that TN caused it. I didn't debate him, but I did come back to this site to get confirmation that I wasn't going nuts. Honestly, I have gleaned more solid information here than I have from the battery of neurologists I have seen. They certainly have their place with respect to my condition, but so do the folks on this great site.
Regards,
Brian

yes i do, have been treated in hospital for facial cellulitis, infection with no fever go figure, but my face, jaw, neck just balloon. after latest hospital stay, have been on antibiotics at home but face still swells, under eye, along cheek bone and jaw. going to see neurologist next month. hang tough
Hi there! I’m new to this, but I just wanted to
comment that I also have face swelling on my right side of my face when I have a flare up.
I get swelling above my eye that is the opposite side of my TN. Its very visible and I'm quite embarrassed about it. Whenever it gets really bad and the weight of it on my eye makes it hard to keep open a take a photo. I showed my neurologist the photos but she couldn't explain it and didn't seem too worried by it. I asked if it could be from the Gabapentin I'm taking but she didn't think so.

I often wake up with swelling around my eye on the side of my TN. The worse the TN is the worse the swelling and the feeling that my eye can't open properly. It sometimes feels like a real effort just to keep my eye open (and it hurts ...). I don't think mine is as visible as it feels, but according to my boyfriend he can tell how bad things are by looking at my face because when I'm in pain my eye looks "bruised". The worse I say the pain is the worse the bruising is, but he only notices visible swelling at the worst points. I also get a temporary focussing problem when the pain is bad which I assume is related. My doctor has never seemed too worried about it when I mentioned it, but he has been treating me for what he thought was a sinus problem and I haven't seen him since I got my diagnosis so it's on my list of things to ask about when I see him tomorrow.
My wife has facial swelling on the side where she has TN also.
Ummm; YES! When I talk alot, it swells up some. When I have a flare up (usually because I have to talk alot - teacher) my left jawline and cheek will swell up to be quite noticeable. I am glad to hear that other suffers have validated this symptom of TN!! I also have the feeling that I have been 'beat up' for a while after this...
