Do you have pain in your tongue? I have severe base of tongue pain, ear pain and back molar pain. My pain is 24/7. My tongue actually hurts. I don't have electric like pain, just throbbing achy pain.

I have a large variety of pain in all 3 branches on the left side and on the 2nd branch on the right side. While stress seems to be a major factor in the pain levels...I had very high stress jobs, now I am not working and the pain is very severe and is there 24/7. Now, the pain causes stress, seems like a vicious circle.
I have had base of the tongue pain on & off and severe enough that an ENT was sure I had cancer & I almost had unneeded biopsies done (thank goodness for 2nd opinions). And, yes, back molars pretty regularly, also down into my neck lymph nodes where they will also swell up and my ear. I'd say 70% of the pain is throbbing and zaps of severe throbbing that go along the nerve. I still get electric shocks, but not as much as when this started 6 yrs. ago.
It amazes me (not in a good way) the large variety of TN pain in many different places that I experience.
To be honest I think that the variety of pain experienced is part of the problem doctors have in diagnosis. When I was describing my experiences to.the neurologist he said I wasn’t describing tn. My symptoms were too all over the place to be tn. I was more an atypical face pain. I disagree and have kept a pain diary ever since to take with me for a second opinion!!!
Which branch is responsible for tongue pain? I haven’t really seen where members have 24/7 tongue pain. I may possible be on the wrong site. I have severe base of tongue pain, stabbing ear, and back molar. Which branch covers this area? I have no electrical shocks, just throbbing pain. Help me someone please.
Where did your tongue hurt exactly? Can you explain the feeling?

Wellington, it was at the base of my tongue on the left side (my TN side) that is part of the 3rd branch of the nerve. From what I remember it was a throbbing, swollen feeling & I thought it was my tonsil because it felt a lot like the tonsillitis I got as a kid.
Me too Helen. And I've added bad problems with my sinuses as an adult including 3 sinus surgeries. But they were all years before the TN showed up. And you were so right when you said that the symptoms of TN are so varied...the docs seem to want this to fit into a nice small set and are so very willing to brush it off if you go outside of the shooting/stabbing pains. It can be frustrating.
Wellington, base of tongue pain plus ear pain could be more like glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Do you have any throat pain?
