What to do when you can't afford your meds?

The doctor wants to change my script from tegretol to tegretol xr, with two different doses. The problem is it's $100 for my new scripts.

I've looked at the resources page of this website, and I don't qualify for most of the benefits because of my age. I have to fill out an application to get help straight from Novartis, but I don't even know if I'll qualify for that.

It just sucks. I've already been through enough with brain tumors and surgeries and this, and I somehow don't qualify for any extra assistance. I can't afford insurance or an additional RX plan, so I just don't know what to do.

Bump!

Hi Cassie, I’m from Canada so I’m not familiar with resources that may help you. Thought I’d bump this up so others may respond.

Definitely try to get help straight from Novartis! Good luck to you and I hope they can help. Can you take the generic forms of the drug? That is what I take.

What is Novartis? Is that the pharmaceutical company? I use to take Topamax and when I first started taking it, there was no generic and I didn't have insurance. it was over $1,000 a month for the prescription. I was able to apply for assistance from the pharmaceutical company for assistance through my doctor's office (my GP). I was able to get it for free. I know that other doctor offices offer this kind of help, because that is my sister's job. She lives in another part of the state. Her job is to apply for assistance for patients through the pharm. co. I would check with your doc's office and see if they can help you. It can take a little time, so if you could swing the first script, then maybe by the time you need more , everything would be in place. Or you could talk to your doc about staying on the regular tegretol until you get the help you need worked out.

Don't just assume you won't qualify. It is worth trying. I couldn't have made it those couple of years without the help.

Get them from Canada. I once had to take lamictal and it was about 400 a month I went online to Canadadrugs.com and got 2 months for about 100. It's safe, legal and this company has a good reputation. You just need to fax or send your scripts to them. They also have generics for some drugs that aren't available in the us yet. Never had any problem with them and soooo much cheaper.
