Relief?

Well, I finally got in to the Neurologist today. He did confirm is (atypical) TN, but does want me to have another MRI to be sure I don’t have a tumor at the base of my brain or anything. He prescribed Tegretol XR for me. When prescribing it, I did ask if it came in generic form, as I can not afford the brand name at this time, and nothing I have taken helps with the pain. I am at my wits end. I don’t know what to do. He assured me, yes, is generic. So, feeling full of hope that there is an end in sight, I went to the pharmacy, waited an hour and a half…for them to tell me there is no generic! POP!! (balloon falls) Now the Dr’s office is closed until Monday…and I don’t know how I will make it at work let alone at home with all the kids, the pain has been SO bad recently. And I have the most UNSUPPORTIVE husband in the world. Guess I’m feeling quite a bit sorry for myself…just breathe, right?

Dear Suzanne:
I am sorry you are going through such a difficult time. Several months ago, I found myself in a similar situation. My primary care position switched my medications after a yet anotherfailed trial of Neurotin. I had taken Tegretol before, so i thought I was good to go when I went to the pharmacy with a script for Tegretol XR. Unfortunately, there is no generic.

However, it does take time for the medication to work, and there is always the possibility for side effects. Instead of getting the full prescription, I opted to get 2 weeks worth of the Tegretol XR. I made this decision based on the fact that when I previously took the generic Tegretol, I a had a myriad of adverse effects. Interestingly, the Teg. XR was very effective and it worked quickly. While I was waiting to see if it worked I also shopped around for a better price and I found it at Walmart’s pharmacy.
I found the side effects of the Tegertol XR to be less dramatic. I was still extremely tired when I took it, but it did not make me feel like a complete zombie. If you choose to take it just remember to take your doses at regular and consistent times. As Ro mentioned, you may notice that the pain starts to break through within a few hours of your next dosage
.
I am sorry that your husband is not supportive. While I know it may be difficult to do, it is important for you to focus on yourself. If you are not functioning well, nothing else will either. Although it is not the same as 1:1 personal support, keep coming back to this group. There is a wealth of knowledge and vast experiences present. Additionally, this group is full of individuals who can provide you with awesome support! We are all here to help and support you !
Peace and healing sent your way

Thank you so much! I am SO happy I found this site, it make me feel less alone. I find myself crying so frequently these days, and your support helps.

Thank you. I have been to the dentist, and all the panoramic x-rays and inspections of my salivary glands, he siad is nothing dental. I just started the Tegretol last night, and am praying it does not take too long to start. The pain seems to get worse, the last few days have been awful. I left work yesterday because I could not hold it in. Please work little pills, and work fast
