So my doctor finally returned our email today. I didn't actually get to talk to him but my mom said he was disappointed that I couldn't handle the Neurontin. He said that that was today's drug of choice for TN but he'll try the old first choice which is Tegretol. I hope that this one works. I have an appointment with him on the 22nd and I don't know how he'll react if I show up and tell him that I couldn't handle this medication either. I just need to be positive and tell myself that it will work seeing as I don't have any other options after medication (my mom said she will refuse any type of surgery -.-) I will start the medication either tomorrow or Thursday so wish me luck.
Pixelkam,
You need to give the tegretol (carbamazepine) a chance to build in your system…you may experience drowsiness, dizziness, inability to concentrate and possibly other side effects, the first few days…as your body adjusts to the med the side effects disappear…
It takes time to get to a therapeutic dose, usually between 400mg - 800mg.
You should feel some relief within 24-48 hrs…
Most important is knowing your starting a new med so you may not feel like yourself for a few days…this is normal and will go away…each time you increase your dose for pain coverage you’ll more than likely experience that. ( it happens with most meds). So don’t give up…give it a chance!
Most neurologists use how you react to tegretol as a diagnostic tool…
Wish you all the best,
(( hugs )) Mimi
