What is the general consensus of PRF - Pulsed Radiofrequency for ATN/TN2?

Hello,

My pain specialist proposes to to PRF, pulsed Radiofrequency. He stated that there is no chance of worsening pain. There could be a pain increase in the first few days after. The pain specialist is very experienced in patients with atypical odontalgia /persistent dentavoliar pain.

I can find very little on PRF in the forums. I know the motto is dont treat dental injury with surgical procedures.

Is there any literate/experiences available, besides the few u found on the search forum? Is this procedure safe?

Thank you!

Hello. I had Stereotactic Radiofrequency Surgery in 2021. 9 months later my face became numb, and since the surgery, the pain has increased significantly. It is called Anesthesia Dolorosa. I would suggest discussing this with your doctor before continuing.
I hope for pain relief for you soon.

Im sorry to hear this.

I googled this and this seems to be a different type of treatment. Nevertheless, thank you for sharing and i hope you will feel better at some point too.

Thank you.

I had PRF today on the Inferior alveolar nerve

(Dental injury on a small molar).

Will update after some weeks on the result.

The procedure itself was painless and quick.

The treatment itself was a piece of cake. It was done with local anastesia without echo due to the location (inner gums).

The first two days after the PRF where the days with the least pain i have had in the last years. Literally 1/10.

After that the pain kicked in again, i was dissapointed. The doctor said it could take up to 14 days for the treatment to work.

After 9 days i noticed a significant drop in pain. This stayed this way all the way until day 29 (pain 1-2/10!!) when the pain came back, altough less. Its been now around 36-37 days. Although i have pain again, my maximum is around 5/10. I did not need tramadol. I will go for a repeat treatment soon.

Im suprised this treatment is not advocated more. For me it seems succesfull (altough expected reduction was 3-6-12 months), sometimes it takes more treatments to reach that. I didnt have such a pain reduction ever since my worsening 7 months ago in March, so i assume its the PRF working

I do notice that trigger points (for me touching the injured tooth) still sets off pain. This did not resolve.
