We’ve been traveling this summer to see our son and his family. OMG …this has caused me lots of trouble with my ATN.
First off, car travel almost always causes a flare. I’m somewhat use to this. I’ll have a day or two of pain after the trip and then again to return. However, it is summer. It is raining here and badly. Almost every afternoon comes a big thunderstorm. This too is flaring my pain and badly. I’m in too much pain. Have others here had flares from travel and for thunderstorms??? What do your doctors suggest? I’m in so much pain, I’m getting bad nausea as well. Normally, I have fairly decent pain control.
I use a compounded cream with three ingredients incl Gabapentin, plus I take Desipramine by mouth (like Elavil). What do you do for weather related pain??? Thank you.
Hi Nomad
I too am terribly triggered by traveling in the car and by weather events. What I do in the late afternoon when it seems to be the worse is go into a dark quiet room, gently wrap a soft black pashmina around my head so it covers my eyes completely, sometimes take an extra gabapentin 300, and just try to centre myself and count 1-2-3-4-5 on the in breath and 1-2-3-4-5 on the out breath. I also do some gentle stretching of the spine and limbs and neck. Forty-five minutes of this with no interruptions will help settle me. I find it really important to keep my eyes closed and let absolutely no light in. Stretching the spine will ease the central nervous system which gets really worked up during a flare. The whole idea is to quiet the whole trigeminal system, including the ganglion. This might help with the nausea too.
I understand it’s hard to get time like this when you’re visiting but try it out and see if this can help you the way it helps me.
