Trying topamax after 6 yrs of gabapentin

I just got back from my neuro and talked him into topamax. I shouldn’t say talked him into. He wouldn’t prescribe it if he didn’t feel good about it. I feel the gabapentin has lost it’s effectiveness. My gp gave me cymbalta last year, the worst medicine to me, ever. I gained 20 lbs immediately. Never had that problem in all my years on gabapentin and various antidepressants.
I realize topamax is not a first line defense med for tn, but I’ve read a lot of ppl think it’s awesome. And I want something that won’t make me gain! I have, like many of you, fibromyalgia and migraines, so I’m trying to find a med that will help with all. Anyone else had success?

Although Topomax did not help my TN pain, I do know of people that have had success with it for migraines.
I hope it helps you!
Christine

I have taken Topomax for a few years for migraines, and it has almost eliminated them. Unfortunately, I have developed Type II TN while on it, so no, it didn't help that. Sorry I couldn't give you a more positive answer.

I take 200 mg of Topamax 2 times a day and it works for me.

Hi,

I was on Topamax for three and a half years, before I had to stop due to kidney stones from the medication. I was on 150 mg, but lost 10 pounds (I was only 90 pounds), so she reduced it to 100 mg. It helped bring the pain to a level that was tolerable, but the side effects were harsh. Kidney stones are a possible side effect and I had them three times while I was on the medication. Also, the cognitive effects of the medication were the worst as I am in school and it was really hard to remember and study. I hope Topamax provides relief for you

So is the Topamax helping your pain? Do you have type 2?

I am both on Topamax and Neurontin for many years for the pain and seizure control. Weird meds for seizures, but all the others had harsh reactions. They have me on 500 mg topamax a day and 3600 neurontin...I cut it down to 400 and 12-2400 of the other. My memory is that of an alzheimer patient. I work all day on trying to cover myself! Don't forget I also am on high doses of pain meds. The pain meds are ok, but I see how the others just make me tired and pudding head! Good luck to all of my friends out there struggling to be normal...while we are oh so not...God bless
