So I’m just wondering if anyone has been on topamax and if so has it been complementary to carbamazepine or used with other medications. It seems as though every 2-3 week’s I’m back in severe pain and I’m just trying to educate myself on alternative medications while I anxiously await my copy of stricking back. Thanks

I was initially given Topomax by a neurologist who DID NOT diagnose me with TN. It did not help my pain even when I was up to 400mg a day. I did see another neuro who diagnosed my TN and put me on Tegretol. It worked very well, but I became allergic within three weeks. My last med was neurontin, which helped somewhat, but I was never pain free. I opted for MVD, and am starting to wean off the neurontin.
There are many different med combos, and it may take awhile to find the one that works for you.

I was started on Topamax in January 2010 and was on it until this August. I was on it with Trileptal and mexiletine. I stopped in August because in the last nine months I had multiple kidney stones which they believed was caused by this medication. Also, I was extremely tired and cognitively impaired. In August when I was give mental status I could not pass.
I was changed to Lamictal which is really helping.
