Trigeminal neruroliga or tooth pain?

hi, i started having severe pain which felt like it was in one tooth 3 years ago, it was constant and unberable. i had my friend take me to tons of dentist and oral surjens. i also went to a endontist at the time had him do 3 root canals on teeth which he said did not need them. but i was in so much pain i said please do them anyway. well my pain did not go away. 8 months after that i went to see a neruroligst. he diagnosed me with tn. we have tried all the meds on me, with no success. finally he said it was time to try surgery. i went to new york where the nerusurgen said i had a vesell pressing on my nerve. he had did a mvd on me he also said i hat type 2 tn. the surgery did not work. that was 8 months ago. i was is such unberable pain for many years i could not take it no more i ended up having a nervous breakdown, and was in the hospital for 3 weeks. i came out and saw my nerurologist a month later. we talked. he asked me again about the pain in my tooth. i said it was in one tooth. he said that was strange for tn. its usually is in more then one tooth with tn. so he asked if i would see his dentist. i saw his dentist about a month ago. he took exrays of my 3 root canals which where done 3 years ago. he found that one of then was not done right. we made another appt. 2 weeks ago to get a retreat done on it. insurance did not cover it so when i went to see him we decided to pull the tooth. the next morning i woke up and pain was gone!!!! wow what a long road this has been. a couple of things i would like to add, is never give up looking for answers to either relieve the pain or for it to go away. make sure you look at other possible causes!!! and a few more things make sure you get supports where you can. i know i was told that it was all in my head and i dont think no one belived me. if so get support other places, this is so important, cant stressed this enough. and for those of you who are on this site learning about a loved on who has tn. really the key to this is to be there and listen to them!!!! this is no joke this is real and they are suffereing. support them as much as you can!!!! god bless love michelle

Michelle, I am so glad for you!

I'm very happy for you, Michelle!

That is fantastic,I am also very happy for you!

Wow Michelle! What a journey, your perseverance paid off, not without much frustration and sadness, but I’m sooooo very pleased for you! Thanks for sharing and updating us on you!
((( hugs ))) Mimi

I am happy for you. Wish the same could happen for me. I have been to 4 dentist, 4 sets of x rays and still have the teeth. I have no insurance either. The pain is mostly from one tooth, but I have to admit that there are about 4 that are possibilities. Dentist around here don't want to touch when I say I have atypical trigeminal neuralgia. I guess a couple of years ago they removed (7) dentist almost all her teeth. She got a good lawyer and sued. Therefore, They don't want to do much for the rest of us with TN or ATN. The x rays supposedly showed nothing. I think they talked to each other ahead of time. Don't want teeth pulled that don't need it. Already had one that didn't even have a cavity when ATN first started. I have actually tried to wiggle the one that hurts most and take it out myself. Middle of the nite pain can make me try desperate things like dental floss to get it out. They are probably right, because it doesnt hurt all the time, but it hurts every day. What to do? I know ATN has put us from comfortable middle class to lower middle class and used up alot of our hard earned and saved retirement account. Would not complain one bit, IF I was any better, but I am worse and getting worse all the time. Have an appointment late Feb with pain clinic, if I make it that long. I pray for all of us and God Bless the one's that have found any kind of comfort through whatever means possible.

Have you tried going to an oral surgeon?

If you're fairly certain that the pain is coming from one tooth (and if the other three possibles are in the same part of your jaw and might be referred pain), it might be worth it to try going to one and failing to mention the ATN during the assessment process. Sometimes abcesses are hard to spot when they're small or only on one side of the socket.

I wouldn't get to the point of removal without mentioning the ATN, but during the investigation process it might be something to leave out if it's complicating things for reasons that may be legal ass-covering rather than medical concern.

Oh Michelle - I'm soooooooooooo glad you got to the bottom of things -- so MVD + extraction = no pain !!!!!! yeahhhh

cleo no i did not.

my neruo just told me that it was time to look at surgery as a option. he did not mention any one doc that i should go to. he was the one that told be about his dentist tho. good thing i went, after being to so many already. i still am ok. thanks for asking.

Hi Michelle, you are sooooo… Lucky that nothing went wrong with the MVD. Most of us here have gone to the dentists and after either root canal procedure or extraction , the pain persisted. We will then lament about making the wrong decision . Comparing MVD to extraction , you are taking greater risk…I am very happy for you. It is fantastic news! You don’t have to take anymore TN medicines from now on.
Warmest regards

Congratulations Michelle!! I haven't been near a dentist in years. My jaw hinge does not open as widely as they would like, so it's always a trauma.

However ,I shall book an appointment after your encouraging story. I have pain in my eye socket, cheeks and earb at the moment, so I'm going to try anything.

It is quite scary to read about the increasing dosage of drugs that some members are having to take. I am searching for possible triggers and I'm putting tooth problem on my list.

Thanks Michelle.

YIPPEE!!!!~ After talking to you a few weeks ago I knew you were at your wits end. I am so freaking happy for you!!!!!!!

Wendy

thanks so much!!!!

Wow, Michelle, your story is a fairy tale wrapped in hell, I am very happy for you, we talked a couple of times and I know how bad shape you were....

But I have to tell you, your stoy scares the hell of me, Like you I have only one tooth that is constantly hurting, the pain immigrated couple of times, but always there, I never thought a toothache from dental reasons can be constant, you had it 3 years constantly??? not intermittent? I don't know how even to address it....What does it say about our dentists, my god, you can not rely on no one!!! do you understand how far you got with this misdiagnosis??? I am in this double time than you, and yes I keep on going to dentists, I have done CT to my lower jaw, half a year ago, but maybe just maybe i should get rid of that tooth, this thought alone is consuming me....I am very interested in what this angel dentist have found, what was it the culprit??? an infection? maybe cracked tooth? What dental can cause you this vicious pain?

Michelle, I don't remember, but this pain came on it's own? spontaneously or after dental work? you felt burning pain from that, probably you felt throbbing? MY GOD

To miracles my friends, sending you all (and i can use one) i am sending from Israel, have a happy new year

hi, i did have one tooth pulled and the pain was in the whole tooth, but now i have some pain again and it feels like its either in the gum or the edge of this other tooth. the tooth that hurt bad when he tapped on the back of it it really hurt. so he new it was a bad tooth, he now checked to see if my gum healed ok and it did. he did tap on the tooth next to it and said it was ok. he said if it still hurts he will pull the other tooth. iguess if it still hurts then maybe that spot in really from tn, i dont know yet. going back to dentist on the 9th, its just strange that the tooth that he pulled allthe pain went away. i will write after i go back to the dentist. have a great new year!!! and god bless
