Just a thought...maybe some one has some advice for,
Been having episodes of ear pain, ice pick feeling on and off, however the last few days one of my teeth on the same side is starting to ache. this tooth was recently capped (long after diagnosed neuralgia) and felt sensitive from the day it was done
So how can I tell if this is genuine tooth ache or something connect to TN? As i am not too sure about how much dentists understand this condition. i can see why people have teeth pulled for no reason,
One way to know if it's a dental problem is to get a dental x-ray, but in your case, where the root canal has been done and you still have pain, it's TN pain. Other symptoms of a bad tooth can be a fever (infection) and bad breath. I have the ice pick in the ear thing too. It's in the glossopharyngeal nerve, so it's GN, along with TN. There is a group for those with ear pain and GN if you look through the groups tab up top of any page. I often have toothaches on teeth that are capped too, but TN attacks can make you feel like you are getting root canals done on every tooth on that one side, all at once, so that is usual TN pain.
I agree. It sounds like TN pain; every time I would have dental work performed, the feeling like I needed a root canal would return. If I waited, (i.e., a month or s0) the pain would eventually subside. I told myself that the dentist just awoke my nerves. (I have 8 capped teeth, 4 with root canals, and about 40 fillings.) If you can wait it out to see if the pain moves around or eases up, it would be a good. Sorry you are going through this pain - I can so relate.
I haven't had any work done on my teeth but I did go to the dentist to get X-rays after the first time I was diagnosed with TN. I just wanted to be sure that it wasn't a tooth issue. The dentist took X-rays and said everything was fine. It's been just over a month since I was diagnosed and I recently started having tooth aches. It almost feels like my teeth are trying to rip themselves out of my gums. I find myself literally tugging at them with my fingers. I also can see why people have teeth pulled for no reason =/ I hope you find relief soon.
I read in the TNA Quarterly newsletter that dental issues are often overlooked. The dentist who was being interviewed recommended Cone Beam CT scans of teeth to rule out dental issues. I had one done in February that indicated that my root canals were fine but it also found a maxillary sinus infection that I hadn't known about.
Vicadin relieves that pain, well along with Trileptal. I know because I recently had a crowned tooth done, for a broken tooth. So I feel your pain. . . It was not fun. I had to wait extra time to go back and have the permanent crown put on because the tooth had not settle down yet. I think it took a couple of months, for it to calm down from the dental work. It still gives me trouble tho. But I don't have the ice pick pain in the ear. I do have ear pain, and the Trileptal works for that.
I too get the ear pain and toothache sensation. I don’t usually get toothaches so for me (because I’ve had 4 teeth removed unnecessarily) I know right away when this happens it’s the TN. Usually my experience is that the toothache sensation will be off and on all day.
i also have earaches and toothaches all on the right side and i have NO teeth, so we know it's tn i'm in Mi. and it was hard to find a dentist 15trs. ago that would touch me because i did have tn i was very blessed i found a dentist that i had been to before he no longer took my ins.but he knew all about tn so he just took the last of my teeth out hope things get better for you
Big thanks for all the replies, not been able to use internet for a while so sorry for not responding sooner. Well the ear pain has eased off for a bit, like i said very intermittent. I didnt have root canal in the tooth that is sensitive but it was capped recently. i think it was that has left it sensitive not the TN. well im hoping! went back to Dr today. She is very sympathetic and does have a good unerstanding of thia condition, though she won't refer me to a Neuro... as it is intermittent and we haven't tried all other avenues..fair enough. She also said it is very often the case that it will burn itself out and possibly not reoccur for months or years. found that a bit confusing as it doesn't seem to be the case in a lot of peoples experience. Wants me to try low dose of pregabablin, that it may be enough to put it to rest. all a bit confusing as she talked like it was a cure. Doesn't really tie in to what I have read. Don't think Dr like their patients to have done the research online!! so for now i can cope with it, hoping it remains this way.
I'm feeling sensations also inside my capped front teeth and my molars. I'm hoping it's not cavities. I went to my dentist and she told me that it's not dental problems. I can only say that it's TN. It's still aching and sensitive so I started using toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
Veronica, I get those sensations where the only way I can describe it would --shock like/cavity type pain. Similar to sensitive tooth pain only more intense and short lived. I have however, always had sensitive teeth. But sense I've had ATN I do not. Maybe I still do and just don't notice it because it is minimal compared to this!!
